Why is Los Angeles spelled LOS...and Las Vegas is LAS..both prefixes are the same sounding?

both LOS and LAS are pronounced the same..why the different spelling

Report as

Because its in spanish , the way spanish works is when the word is feminine like for example vegas or clara , then it'll be for example la or esta . " the prefixes " as you say will be feminine as well but when the word is masculine the prefix will be masculine as well.

Because it's Spanish and in Spanish Los is masculine and Las is feminine according to the ending of the next words..... Soo Angeles is masculine and Vagas is feminine.

In Spanish, LOS is a masculine label and LAS is a feminine label. Angeles is a masculine word (notice how it ends in ES) and Vegas is a feminine word (notice how it ends in AS). Does this help? c:

Actually "the Vegas" were a family.
Report as
Oh, I see. "Vegas" is a feminine word though, as it ends in AS.
Report as
Vegas is a family name, and "familia" is a feminine word. Names don't necessarily have a gender.

Los is the masculine-plural way to use "the" while Las is the feminine-plural way to say "the".
Angels (Angeles) in Spanish is a masculine word therefore it would be appropriate to use the masculine "the".
The Vegas were a family and the Spanish word for family (familia) is feminine therefore it would be appropriate to use the feminine version of "the".

Both the word "the" one feminine, the other masculine both referring to a plural noun.

First of all, it is not a prefix, it is an article. For example, "the" in English. Angeles in Spanish means angels, so if LA were to be named in English it would be call "the angels." In Spanish la, lo, las, los are articles. La, las are feminine, which means that they usually go with words that end with "a." As oppose to masculine words that normally end with "e." Examples: las casAs y los acionEs. The "s" just makes it plural as opposed to singular.

Now, the names Los Angeles & Las Vegas are Spanish names because they used to belong to Mexico but on the 1846 US vs. Mexico war, the land was exchanged in a treaty of peace.
