Hypothetically speaking, if Adam and Eve were real, how did they populate the earth? (Description)

(I'm Christian but don't fully believe in Adam and Eve) so lets say we have Adam and Eve, they have 2 children, a boy and a girl. then what? how did that populate the earth? wouldn't it just stop there? wouldn't the offspring of siblings be disabled in a way? I don't understand how the story of Adam and Eve makes sense.

back then they would marry sister and brother because God allowed it and it was natural. but later on God changed it to were it was not allowed anymore because there was enough population. and yes Adam and eve are real, read the bible it explains it a lot better its in there

Alright so diseases and health problems. Wouldn't that just ruin everything and stop them from making more after a while

Back in the old days, they didn't have the knowledge about these diseases that they were causing to their bloodline. The only thought that was in their minds was keeping their wealth in the family and Incest would be the only way to do so.

Inbreeding does cause disabilities.
Report as
If your talking about physical disability that's quite rare even in inbreeding but mental disability is more common and which I would consider it falling under the diseases.
Report as
I'm a biologist, and mental disability is not a disease.

Inbreeding can cause severe disabilities once you get past the first generation, which in this myth would have been required for dozens of generations before the genes were spread enough apart. You would not actually get those dozens- the species would collapse long before due to buildup of mutation and lack of genetic variability- it's called genetic bottleneck.

I apologize for asking this, Meliidawson, because it's not answering your question. It is a question itself and I'm just curious before I could even begin to think of giving you an answer. But if you're a Christian, how can you possibly not fully believe in the creation of Adam and Eve? I'm truly not trying to start anything. I'm just asking. Or is that hypothetical, too?

Looking at how most of you are reacting, I might as well just not consider myself a Christian.

While I was a believer for about the first 50 years of life, we always were taught in church that the Bible was an infallible guide to spirituality -- not a science or history text book. While the Bronze Age humans who developed the stories in the Bible could not help but insinuate their own Bronze Age understanding of the world into those stories, we believed that the spiritual truths that God wanted his people to know and follow were contained in those stories.
Report as
SissyMom, If you want your religion to become a small cult just keep making claims like that.
Melii, You don't have to believe ever single word in the bible to be a Christian, the large majority of Christians see the Adam & Eve story and Noah's Ark as allegories, stories not to be meant literally but instead meant to teach a life lesson.

Oh, my goodness! When people don't understand something, they make up stories using the (limited) knowledge they have. And they believe those stories to be truths because they have no other explanation. When early man found fossils and remnants of dinosaurs they didn't understand what they were seeing and made up stories of dragons. Manatees and dolphins became mermaids and mermen. Star constellations became fascinating bedtime tales. Native Americans have some wonderful legends that are plausible even unto this day. Please give the writers of the scriptures a break! They were doing the best they could with the information they had. Believe as you must and will, but they were believing as they could and did... With faith. Put your faith where you will, and give them the respect they deserve. They have earned it.

Actually its pretty cool how bodies worked back then. Everything was living longer aging slower and reproducing better. That's why it speaks of people living to like 800 and higher.... Also the tower of babble is my favorite story cause it informs us how language confusion slipped in. Before that I could say whatever came out of my mouth and you'd not only understand to what I said in your language but I could have said "blabbered" and you'd know I (meant) go do your job. They spoke an ultima language and never delt with misunderstandings......... That's cool!

There is zero evidence of any of that. In fact, every single piece of remains we have and historical record shows life expectancy was much lower than ours- people lived into their late thirties or early forties on average.

yes, because it's completely possible for humans to live up to 800 years or higher being surrounded by thousands of bacteria and diseases and yet having the same DNA

Hebrew was an early language but as I clearly stated in my post... The ultimate language is out of reach and now only God, the angels and other perfect beings speak it.

Also you earth was new and not as full of bacteria and diseases. The flood mixed the bacteria into the air. Rain is cool how it does that.

Exactly what I was thinking skeptikitten.. I've read that back in the day people's life expectancies were very low. That's why people would marry very young because at the age of 12-16 their lives were already half over.

Again, none of that is true LPT. There was no global flood, and bacteria were around long before people. Rain has nothing to do with how bacteria spread.

Actually if you know ANYTHING about rain you'd know that when it rains it pulls all the bacteria into the air.

Honey, you can be a Christian without believing that every word in the Bible is the literal truth. There are many, many religious people who believe that the stories in the Bible are instructional parables, meant to help people live better lives, but not an actual historic record. Believe in whatever feels right to you-it's ok.

Honey, I don't know if you're a Christian or not, but you're right as far as everything in the Bible not being "literal". There were parables. But to not believe in the story of Adam and Eve? I'm sorry, but that's one major non-belief for a Christian. Adam and Eve are a given.
Report as
The majority of Christians worldwide consider that myth allegorical- rightly so as it is not only biologically impossible but it is based on older Sumerian mythology of the region.
Report as
It can be successfully argued that Adam and Eve are metaphorical. Adam was the leader of a particular tribe among many that ultimately led to Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. Even the Bible acknowledges that there were other people on Earth at the time of Adam and Eve. Otherwise, when Cain was banished to the land of Nod, there must have been people there for him to start his own tribe. Also, why otherwise would Cain express fear to God that others would not know who he was and try to do him harm?

Eve used to give birth for a boy and a girl at once. These two are considered a sister and a brother, therefore they can't get married, however the second time she gives birth to another girl and boy they can marry from the first children Eve had before them. Adam and eve were REAL. The Bible says that God walked with Adam and Eve in the cool of the day. The Bible also says that God created Eve out of Adams rib. Guess what? Men have one less rib than women. The Word of God is real, it's true and inspired by the Holy Spirit. The word (the Bible) is living, gives life, peace, understanding, wisdom and so much more. When I don't understand something in the Bible I simply ask God to reveal to me what it means. He always does. Years ago I asked God how do I know if I am really saved. Two days later I got a letter in the mail from a ministry. I opened it and inside was a pamphlet and the title was How Do I KNOW If I Am Really Saved. My question was answered. Read Hebrews 11:1 and embrace it. I have experienced miracles in my life and healing in the presence of others. I know many others who have as well. Find a good church and attend regularly. You will receive spiritual food. Your faith will grow. You will have a better understanding of The WORD Of God. God is not a respecter of persons. He will do for you what He has done for me. He is AWESOME! He will give you peace that surpasses human understanding. You can experience peace when everything around you is falling apart. Back to Adam and Eve... the Bible says. "with God all things are possible." How Adam and Eve and their offspring procreated and filled the earth doesn't matter to my being saved. It doesn't help me walk with the Lord, give me peace or joy etc. I may just ask God about that. I understood how that happened when I was younger but I am a senior citizen now and suffered some memory loss when I got carbon monoxide poisoning earlier this year.

It's very reasonable. There wouldn't be any negative genetic disabilities with inbreeding because Adam and Eve had no illness. They didn't have all this stuff we have in our foods right now, they didn't have preservatives, pesticides, ect. Plus, the bible said people lived longer back then because the atmosphere was pure. There was no pollution in the air. Adam lived for 360 years. The bible says that not only did they have Cain, Abel, And Seth, they had many more children. If those children lives hundreds of years, then they too will have many many children, ect. It makes sense mathematically.

don't forget lilith, who showed up before eve was ripped from adam's rib cage. and i quote "When God created Adam, he was lonely, so God created Lilith from the same dust from which Adam was molded. But they quarrelled; Adam [the proverbial domineering male] wished to rule over Lilith. But Lilith [a militant feminist] was also proud and willful, claiming equality with Adam because she was created from the same dust. She left Adam and fled the Garden. God sent three angels in pursuit of Lilith. They caught her and ordered her to return to Adam. She refused, and said that she would henceforth weaken and kill little children, infants and babes. The angels overpowered her, and she promised that if the mother hung an amulet over the baby bearing the names of the three angels, she would stay away from that home. So they let her go, and God created Eve to be Adam's mate [created from Adam's rib, so that she couldn't claim equality]." http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/1513/whats-the-story-on-lilith-adams-first-wife

Wow. I find it really amazing the things Christians will come up with that don't even match the Bible (the story of lilith). Anyway, it's impossible. I mean they couldn't have lived for hundreds of years of a lifespan because there was a lot of bacteria. They were barely even clean and you also had to realize that they had to get food through killing animals. It was impossible! They would have died of many diseases and then they had the same DNA so there was no way they could have adapted to anything.

I don't get involved in debates when I don't know what I'm talking about. If you are going to make a statement and have anyone over the age of 12 take you seriously, you should know what you are talking about.
I studied the bible, quran, torah, tulmud, vedas, etc. before I rejected them, why don't you learn science before you reject it? At least you would be treated with more respect by those that do understand science when you comment on the issue.
If you don't care then state it "I never studied science very much but this is what I BELIEVE...." When you make false claims you leave yourself open to attack.

Your first comment makes no sense in it's relation to this topic, and it's like saying "So you weren't hypnotized into not smoking, so your still smoking" :-/

As to your second. First, not understanding the science behind how the world works is no excuse to put "god did it" in the answer. And all scientist agree on the overall theory of evolution, they only debate on the minor details.
And second, There have been, and are, thousands of gods being worshiped all over the world, which one of them are we to believe, god is far from constant.
Report as
You totally misunderstood me. I get what they say proves these theories, I am just not gullible enough to believe it all. Because some man said he did a carbon dating, what was the compared value related to? He could not possibly have anything. And the bang and ape stuff is absolutely ridiculous. If there was any bang it was done by God. No way things just fell together perfectly conducive to hold each life form in earth, the sun just "so" far as to warm but not fry us. The planets spaced just so to keep us where we are and all things working in harmony with the gravitational force of the earth etc etc... No way! You can believe a lot if coincidences but I dont and never will. Again, which scientist do we believe? Which article is true? Yours or mine?
Report as
The one thing I agree with is there's many gods yes.
Report as
I'm not going to go into the details of evolution, since there is a link in my answer above that explains everything. That said I also know you will not look into it because of the standard religious fear that many of you carry, in which you fear either learning conflicting information with your self made belief or a more irrational fear that you will somehow be angering your god by doing so.
As to the universe and how it works you again use another common religious point of view. You begin at the end and then twist science and logic to make everything work. You say it's impossible for all this to be by accident because you don't have knowledge of how the universe works, of course you couldn't see randomness when you only look at one solar system. But as you look out into our own galaxy we see massive amounts of randomness, but we also see things that are very similar, like the planet orbiting the star Tau Ceti which is it's "goldilocks" zone just like Earth is.
You either learn how things work in the universe or you remain blissfully ignorant of it, I don't care which you chose. But please, don't pretend to others that it must be false just because you don't understand it.

No, you'd make some bizarre negative statement, tho it left one of your fellow atheists on here speechless because he is doing just what was predicted he would do! You wouldn't believe because you do not have understanding and have a very closed mind.
And you couldn't possibly understand how God created everything with the scientific techniques you explain because you have no understanding of God at all. So I guess we just have to agree to disagree then.
I can prove He is Christ. He's the only prophet who ever called him by name. You cannot prove the theories. You can show me articles, but you can't prove it is all I'm saying. THAT is why we cannot prove God to you. But you don't relate it that way!

Adam and Eve's children would have married each other. At the beginning of time, though, this practice was acceptable in the eyes of God for the obvious reason that the human race could not have continued without it. But we should not see this as a contradiction to God's moral law, i.e., that He makes certain exceptions merely for the sake of convenience. We know today that inbreeding can be a dangerous health hazard. When close blood relatives marry (who share a common gene pool), the chance of passing on a lethal gene combination to their children is greatly increased.
The average human being today carries four to six lethal genes. They can be caused by deletions and mutations of genes in the gene structure of the cell, and these lethal genes are what caused problems with inbreeding. However, since Adam and Eve were God's original couple, they would have had the purest genetic code possible. (My answer continues in the comments)

Helpful Fun Thanks for voting Comments (2)
Report as
Without such lethal combinations, any danger of genetic mutations among their children (or their children's children) was very unlikely. This helps us understand why God would have originally allowed for marriage among the sons and daughters of Adam and Eve (and, indeed, for other Israelites - for example, Abraham, who harried his half-sister - until the law of Moses specifically forbid it.) However, given the health dangers and the moral complications that could result within families that would form such relationships, God eventually prohibited marriage between close relatives, including other degrees of kinship that may be called incestuous (see Lv 18:7-20).

Hope this helps! - ManOfKnowledge
Report as
Aside that most of what you said is hogwash, they've traced back human genetics back thousands of years (many more years then the 6k of the bible), and I've never heard of it being a cleaner gene pool then it is now. They've actually traced it back to the emergence of humans from Africa, and also proven that we were not the first human species (Neanderthals are not related to us at all). One or more species of humans were here many many thousands of years before Homo Sapiens arrived on the scene.

You need to examine the evidence for evolution and for creation and then decide for yourself what to believe. In fact, the Bible warns against blindly believing what others teach. The Bible encourages Christians to use their brain "Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but be a new and different person with a fresh newness in all you do and think. Then you will learn from your own experience how his ways will really satisfy you." (Romans 12:1-2). Living Bible. Some questions you can answer for your self #1 How did Life Begin?

You start with Adam and Eve. These two people are created genetically perfect - no mutations (copying mistakes in the DNA). These two people have many sons and daughters. Because this generation would have VERY few mutations, there is no harm in this generation producing another generation, and another. There is another even that has to be taken into account: The Tower of Babel (Genesis 11). This is when God confused the languages. It would be rather hard to live with people who spoke a different language than you, so you go with a group that you understand. These groups them migrate all over the world, and that generation makes more generation. Relatives eventually become more distantly related, which eventually brings us to where we are today.
