Why are the brakes on my 1999 Yamaha Road Star Silverado locking up?

They suddenly began dragging, and then quickly locked up.

Could be the brake cylinders are going bad or getting rusty and need to be re-built ! Sounds like it's time for a brake job !

johnwayne is right, there's probably rust and debris all caught up, and the pads might be worn off from "over use". how many miles on the bike and when was the last time you checked the brake fluid? neglecting your brakes for routine maintenance is pretty high risk.

Thanks to all of you. It makes sense, because even though the bike only has 5,000 miles on it, it was garaged for a long time, and this was the first long ride. I think the best thing is a fender to fender checkup.
