It was an attempt to take out our navy in one blow so that they could take over all of the pacific islands without our interference. They needed those islands to gain control of oil and other desperately needed resources to fuel their invasion of China. Unfortunately for them, our aircraft carriers were out at sea for a training exercise, and weren't destroyed in the bombing.
