Mods, is there a rhyme or reason behind question deletion?

I've been on long enough to recognize "questionable" questions and therefore will wait a good period of time before answering or commenting on them to ensure they are not deleted. But now I'm seeing questions that are HOURS old that I spend a great deal of time typing detailed, in depth answers for, only to see the question later deleted. I'm becoming reluctant to wasting my time trying to answer many questions without understanding just what triggers a deletion.
Any guidance would be appreciated. Thank you.

Content is only removed if it somehow violates our Community Guidelines. If you are finding that your content has been removed, it may be a good idea to re-read the site's Community Guidelines. We no longer allow questions such as 'What/Who is your favorite..."? and other low-quality chatty type questions. You can read them here: http://help.ask.com/link/portal/30015/30018/Article/93/What-are-the-Ask-com-Q-A-Community-Guidelines

Please note that under the section 'Relevant Questions', it states:
Post questions that others can actually answer. Statements that are not questions and "Magic 8-Ball" questions that are basically unanswerable, such as "Does he like me?", "Will I get a puppy for my birthday?", or "Am I pregnant??" are not really answerable. In addition, please refrain from posting chatty forum questions such as "this vs. that", "yes/no", and "What's your favorite??" type questions.

As to why some questions are 'hours old' when they are deleted. During busy times, the moderators might miss something that gets cleared to the site and then someone else reports at a later time. Especially during busy times, this is common. We try, but we can't be everywhere at once, which is why we rely on our members to flag inappropriate or offensive content.

Thank you! The question, which spawned this question, was only 2 hours old so that makes sense.
I had assumed that was what the 8 or so minute delay time between asking a question and the question posting was for?? To ensure it was an appropriate question.

You're welcome :o) I hope that helps. I know it's frustrating to type out an answer only to have the question removed, but it does happen. In the case of underage users, sometimes they don't identify themselves as underage for a long period of time, but when they do everything they've posted gets removed - even if it's days or even weeks old.

It did yes! Again, thank you for taking the time to explain it :)

from my brief time here, I'd say there is tremendous wiggle-room in how the mods interpret their own rules, but their site, their rules. It is frustrating to see questions like 'How do I lucid dream' or 'What does it mean when my boyfriend (blah blah blah)..' get asked over and over and just keep rolling to the top, while correct answers to math questions are routinely removed. I understand the site focus is entertainment not, enlightenment, but sometimes I have to wonder while they'll allow someone to say 'God caused evolution', but remove a thread that posts a correction to an incorrect formula of the area of a circle- makes it pretty clear what agenda is being promoted, but it's still amusing at times.
