My pet macaw can't balance himself or perch. Please help!

2 days ago my macaw had a seizure and has not been the same since. Not until yesterday did he start eating and drinking again. He has slowly gotten better but is not 100% by far! The biggest problem is that he can't balance himself when he walks and he can't perch on anything. If anyone knows anything to do please help! Also we took him to the vet and the vet did not know! Thanks.

For the next week take out his perchs so he doesn't hurt himself or exhast his energy by repeatedly trying to get up on his perches. Put his food & water bowls at ground level & if he's looking distressed cover his cage with a warm heavy blanket. The dark will help him rest. Keep him in a quiet room. This may help him get over the seizure. Have you considered that he may have had another seizure since without you seeing it, Is your bird tame & bonded to you. I ask this because they have a much shorter lifespan when they become bonded with Humans due to loosing some of their natural wild instinct. You need to find an Avian Vet & speak to him. I have only bred budgies but the same rules apply to most birds.

Yes he is very tame and we are keeping him in a basket in a quiet room. He is not going downhill so to speak, but he is not improving either. It has been 2 day and i am worried. I am VERY close to this bird. My dad is also an avid bird breeder and I am following his suggestions. Thanks for the help.

Your welcome, I'm glad your dad knows about birds. A warm room may help perk him up. Just keep an eye on his vent. If he gets runny dark green poop all over his feathers he may have a chill or the stress of the seizures could be the cause. & if he starts dribbling all over his chest feathers then he's pretty sick. Goodluck with your bird.

I would try to find a vet that specializes in exotics. I had a dog that use to have seizure's and he would be disorientated for a while afterwards, but not for 2 days. Hopefully his balance will come back, it may take longer with birds.

If the vet didn't know, then take your pet to a real vet. Here on ask.com you'll never get a professional answer.
