Walnut (oil based) stain was pretty much what every piece of wood furniture had at that time....I was there...I remember. Then when you cleaned the wood pieces, Old English wood polish was used. Furniture colors were rust, brown, gold, and cream and the kitchens had avocado colored appliances. Walnut was usually the wood color/stain of choice.
If you mean color, dark walnut was hugely popular. A very deep shade of brown. esp. in kitchens. (Along w/ pewter cabinet pulls, Harvest Gold/Avacado green appliances & geometric patterned floor tile.) Bedroom, livingroom & dining furniture too. Pecan was also very common - a light dusty tan shade of brown. (The popular opposite of these stain colors was pure white lacquer. For a simple & clean modern look.)
