Who sang "How much is that puppy in the window"?

originally?

Report as

The song is "How Much is that Doggie in the Window"
~
It was written by Bob Merrill in 1952 and based on the folk tune, Carnival of Venice. The best-known version of the song was the original, recorded by Patti Page in 1952.

Written by Bob Merrill, sung by Patti Page, 1952. And it's "doggie", not "puppy".

Bob Merrill couldn't read music and had a xylophone he named Suzie. He said that whenever he went to sell a song to a record company his score had no crotchets or quavers, but a string of number, corresponding to the key on the xylophone.

Eventually he learned and life became easier. (I didn't realise that Doggy in the Window was one of his.)

Patti Page gets the gold award. She did it with a lovely little bark.

I actually wrote a (very) short story about this: http://www.booksie.com/humor/short_story/dozy/a-matter-of-imperfection
