How can you make hair lighter?

I have dark, dark brown hair (people call it black) and it is damaged from chlorine. It is brittle and dry, but it feels soft. Is there a possible way that I could make my hair a lot lighter than it is now? I don't want to sit in the sun all day though. I want my hair to be dramatically lighter in a week or two. Help, please?

Dye it/bleach it? Although this would strip your hair of its natural oils and vitamins.. you're kinda doing that already with chlorine. You can also put lemon on it, coat it thoroughly and then put direct sunlight on it - doesn't need to be long. Just at times that you want i.e. 20 min intervals.

I know what you mean
My roots are brown but It looks black
I think that you get less sun is how it gets lighter
But for some people when you cut your hair shorter it gets a lighter color sometimes

You should see a professional hairstylist;) IF your ends are dry and brittle the best way to become "blonder"...;) should be a few careful steps. Before any thing - have a Malibu treatment done to remove the chlorine. They are amazing..
Next have a deep conditioning treatment with protein. Now your hair stands a chance...-have foils put through out which will brighten up the entire hair. Make sure to ask for fine if you want a natural look. Otherwise chunky is fun too.
If you still desire to be blonder yet- have a new growth color formula of your choice done, making sure to only put it by the scalp to avoid damaging your locks.
Best of Luck to You!

Yes, that would be a problem. Foils usually keep the product off of the skin though. However; if you are very sensitive why chance it?!

The only way to make your hair "drastically lighter" would be to color it. Before doing so, you should purchase an intensive hair conditioner to repair the damage to your hair since color, highlights, etc. contain chemicals which can cause more damage since your hair is not at its healthiest. Also, have a professional color your hair.
