To tend to a lime tree, you should choose the appropriate time for planting, which is normally during spring and summer. Then, ensure that the site for planting drains very fast and the tree can get enough sunlight. During winter ensure the tree is indoor or the when temperature is at least 40 degrees, you can leave it outside. Go to http://doubledanger.com/living-green/how-to-take-care-of-a-lime-tree for more.
I have had my lemon, lime, and orange trees for over 6 years. They can not handle temps that fall below freezing. I would NOT recommend putting it in the ground, unless you live somewhere that it doesnt freeze.
