Do you think public schools should or should not take religious holidays off?

I think they should. You can't MAKE anybody be religious, so if they're not, they just get a free day off. But for a religious person, it does make a difference.

People take religious days off. It does make a difference, if one religion is favored (Christianity) by government.

Training is going well. Have actually been in AZ since Sat, very happy about that. Gotta see some family, while in northeast. Saw my dad, step-mom, my bro, and step sis. Boston leads 6-2 in 8th, going for sweep in Cleveland. They return home tomorrow for Royals. North Carolina is very beautiful, was there in 93, 97, and 98 to visit my mom and grandparents. Was in Charlotte, to change flights weekend before last. Spent last 4 nights I was in northeast at my dad or my bro's, was awesome, wish I'd had more time there. But, oh well.

Don't get them here, either, get the Mets. Thank god the weekend is here. High temp in the 40's today. This crap is why I moved to AZ. My dad said was in 60's in RI.
Report as
Well I won't make you more depressed and tell you how nice it was here today lol..
Hubby got a sunburn.. I wore lotion:)..Is AZ always hot? How cold is the winter there? and...... do you see snakes often ewww.. :(
Report as
AZ is not always hot. It was in 90's today. Summers absolutely suck. To me, Sept-May is worth the misery. I wore shorts Christmas Day, my first year there in 2005. I wouldn't change the move for anything. Of course, meeting the wife there helps. Match.com worked for us, go figure. It was nice here in Buffalo today, got in the 50's. Red Sox won, again.
Report as
I haven't seen a snake, yet. Knock on wood.
Report as
You met your wife through a dating site? Wow. .Married for 5 years?
I thought the summers were hot, but Igather you prefer hot to New England weather. Snow is pretty till it comes down hahahaha..This winter was brutal, though 2 winters ago it was a nightmare. No place to shovel the snow,Just be careful where you walk. We saw 3 lizards so far. They don't bother me unless they pop up and surprise me.
Report as
Yup, met her through a dating site, married 6 years May 31. We have been through alot, but i wouldn't trade her fir anything. I don't miss NE weather, I hate snow, let alone driving in it. I miss the fall foliage, some. I miss watching the Sox and Bruins, whenever I want, as well as family, but I wouldn't change that I moved. I do see lizards frequently, but they are tiny. The cats like to play with them, it's hilarious. Also, have seen a few scorpions, but nothing to write home about. I also miss Dunkin Donuts coffee from home, I almost never get the way I want it in AZ, but in northeast, it's always right. Go figure.

The only reason I think schools should take religious holidays off is so the family can spend this time together. But, only for that day. And it should be for not just 1 religion, but all *only fair*. But, to be honest I don't think so b/c it wastes time spent learning.

Every one...or just yours? That's the problem. Christianity...they are already observed in sneaky way. Christians....aggressive, even when in front already.

Why do you assume that it's just Christianity, Frog? This is what the OP meant by starting debates in the comments.

What makes you think I'm Christian?

Yes because there are certain people that are strict on religion and if the kids didn't get off then the parents would take them out of school anyways. Plus we need our breaks sometimes :)

Well, there are some holidays that kind of cross over between religious and secular. Easter and Christmas are the two big ones. Also, school systems have scheduled days to take off anyways, both as breaks for kids and teachers, and days for the teachers and faculty to plan without the students present. So it's useful if they coincide with religious holidays.

I do not think public education should structure itself around a certain religion, but I do think that there should be accommodations made for religious events, such as a child missing school for a religious event. "Accommodations" meaning that the child's parents can notify the school ahead of time and then organize with the teachers to make up any missed work, or have it finished ahead of time.

Of course not. It's against the Constitution, and that's all the reason needed. Also, you can't tell people what to do in comments. What country are you from?

Religious holidays should be observed. If kids don't get those holidays off, then chances are parents will take them out anyway to observe the holiday.

THAT is a good question .. Our modern society has decided that it's just not acceptable to support one religion and not another .. so they have removed the historical practice of reciting the Lords Prayer in schools, have removed any Christian related symbols from public government buildings .. They have done a lot to remove God from public anything.. YET we still celebrate Christian based events like Christmas, Good Friday, Easter and Thanks Giving Day as statutory holidays. Go figure.

If it's a Stat holiday .. which would include school staff and bus drivers...then of course, it should be a school holiday.

Christmas is celebrated for secular reasons and not just a religious holiday. Plus the winter break usually encompasses Hannukah as well (at least where I am.) Easter is another secular crossover, but even without Easter there would still be a spring break. Thanksgiving is an American holiday... I've never heard of anyone considering it as a major Christian holiday. Perhaps you can explain that one to me?

I think they should. People like to be with their families. Nowadays, not many kids spend time with their families except for holidays, so I don't think that should be taken completely away. Also, it's nice to have time off to relax and come back to school refreshed.

I think they should because some people care about there religious family and want to be with them with there children there not just themselves.

I think it would be fair, but that will never happen because people who have nothing to do with religion will fight against it and sight seperation of state and religion, there is no God, so on and so forth.

You cant because you have the freedom to practice your religion and the schools cant take away your right to practice your religion

because of separation of church and state religious holidays shouldn't be days off for specific holidays, but honestly the way they have it, with the breaks, several religious holidays are given a chance to be celebrated.

i think if days are given for religious holidays then all religions should be given, not just major religions such as christianity or Islam, but pagan and any other religions' days too.
