I just went up to dunk a basketball, and I fell from the rim straight on my back, my right lower back is hurting bad, what injury do I have.

also should I ice the injury or apply heat

How do you expect us to diagnose you over the internet?! If it hurts that bad, see a doctor.

Ice is to numb and reduce swelling. Heat is to increase circulation. Usually you alternate them, never more than 20 minutes of either at one time.

You may simply have a friction burn on your skin. If it feels deeper it may be a bruise or a broken rib or a burst appendix. Your info is too general and no one on this site is a medical professional.

How does ice create heat to create a burn?
I'm pretty sure ice creates frost bites not burns...

You hurt your pride. Don't worry, it'll heal.

Ice it. As for the type there is no way anyone on the internet can help you. You may just have bruised it (contusion), or strained a muscle by the way you landed, or broke something. You would need an examination by a medical professional to know what the injury is.

Do I ice it again tomorrow, or should I use heat?

Heat is for tense muscles only. Any injury needs ice. For the first day you should ice it for 10-15 minutes every couple of hours. Also take a pain reliever, Advil, Aleve, whatever. Tomorrow still ice it just not as often.

Ice for the first 24 hrs you can wrap the ice pack with a towel so that it does not burn you. I would recommend seeing a doctor though because your back is hurting so bad. No one can tell you what your injury is over the internet. Only a doctor could and there are things they will do to determine if you have damaged any internal organs but ultimately X-ray or other scans would be necessary to be sure. If you have internal injuries etc... The sooner you see the MD the better your chance of recovery.

Take some ibuprofen. It'll help with inflammation. And ice it. But if it continues to hurt see a chiropractor or a doctor.
