What country do you think is most civilized? Some of what constitutes greater civilized behavior are listed below...

America seems to have slipped quite a great deal - despite our constant mantra that we are the most civilized - to the rest of the world that may have been once true - but no longer. Here are some criteria regarding what qualifies any country as "highly civilized" - you probably have even more - what do you think? 1) equality of women to men in financial and social equivalence; 2) heightened respect - and interest for science; 3) educational endorsement to thrive as free-thinkers with greater domestic and worldwide critical thinking; 4) the reduction or elimination of wishful or magical thinking (superstition) replaced by evidence and rationality; 5) free markets that endorse innovation and invention, but not at the cost of individual liberty or environmental destruction; 6) ambition and enthusiasm to advance the nations culture and policies derived from this enthusiasm; 7) a jurisprudence system that the burden of declaring guilt (beyond a reasonable doubt) is upon the State; 8) health preventative education to ward off future diseases such as diabetes; 9) the separation of church and state from qualifying elected leaders; 10) investment by government to instigate the growth of private enterprises (businesses); 11) civility: how members of a nation talk to each other - despite how deeply they may disagree on any topic; 12) highly intelligent and effective spending on military and intelligence sources to protect the sovereignty of a nation - without authorization to interfere in other nation's own sovereignty (unless they pose a clear and present danger); 13) respect for the language of a nation and its proper usage - debasement of language is frowned upon; 14) enthusiasm for history (not revisionist); literature; art and music... (I'm sure you can think of many more qualifiers); 15) a sovereign citizens ability to have a say (vote, campaigning) in the elevation of a citizen to elected governmental office; 16) accountability for both the private sector enterprises as well as government for disregard of the constituents or voters when used for personal gain...

Denmark.

None but the one that is most civilized in my opinion is Spain but it doesn't meet all your requirements and no country will be perfect

Spain is up there too - unfortunately Spain is now dealing with Islamic immigrant ghetto-ization, terrorism, and still problems with the post ultra-conservative Catholic nationalist, Franco and enemies that still manage to cause conflicts to this day.

Canada, the world's largest country, is in there - but the pollsters look at population density as well - much of Canada is not inhabited.

The Inuit and Dene would not agree.
Canada has had same-sex marriage for years. We've had full Medicare for everyone on Canadian soil for decades. A new mother gets a year off work and is guaranteed a job of equal value/pay when she returns. Paternity care is widespread.

Given your 16 definitions, that country doesn't exist on our planet. That is why we are still looking to space for answers.

Interesting comment - suppose we had the technology, money, and national will to colonize another planet - don't you think out settlers would carry all of their petty fears, prejudices, and other character deficits with them?
Report as
Of course we would, I was hoping that they would/could enlighten us to a better way.

Hi, Cerebro.
So you want me to tell you what I think is the most civilized country? To do that I would need my own choice on what is civilized. To give you my opinion on which country is the most civilized by my standards: I think that would be any country that follows God.

Interesting take: the most civil country is the one most obedient to God? Deserves a star for adding to debate.
Report as
Marcus, Iran follows "god"

Shinypate - Thank you!
.
Boo - Pate clarified my answer. 'The most civilized country is the one most obedient to God'. Iran thinks they follow God but in my opinion they're not obedient to Him as they follow the Koran, not the Bible.
Report as
Iran, Syria, Lybia, Egypt, Iraq, the Congo, Indonesia, etc. all follow God - and just look at how incredibly civilized they are among other nations...
Report as
Cerebro - They all follow Allah.

I've been posting Mad - but as usual - I am not obeying the rule that my answers can't challenge the pious - who obviously can't handle challenges - I wish Ask would just come clean and say this is a site for Christians only.
Report as
Cerebro, seeing that you just insulted me I don't know how you expect me to believe you that your posts are completely sincere.
Report as
Mad: I just caught this from 8 months ago - I definitely would not insult you unless you start name-calling - to challenge an idea is not a personal attack on you - although I am constantly insulted, censored, and considered a hostile poster - from and to the religious - who have never had to defend their beliefs rationally. These beliefs are typically "installed" when Americans were children and didn't have the intellectual capacity to question them. Children are highly emotional and this indoctrination into the irrational nature of religion becomes emotionally cemented in - which is why any challenges I post are met with personal attacks on me - not on the argument - the subject is too emotionally ingrained. PS: you should realize by now that I actually like you - you have intelligent responses and I often agree with you. ;-)

Bingo - Pew polls and others picked Denmark (although the massive influx of Arab Islamic immigrants has created ghettos and rising crime rates - same as in Paris, Madrid, and other western countries - amazing they'd flock to lands filled with infidels to reap the rewards of socialist leaning democracies - free health care trumps murdering infidels and unbelievers)...
Report as
@cerebro, whoa, you just lumped a whole population into one single catagory of
So called "infidel hating, yet using people". I realize having lived in Europe to some extent what you are referring to, but as with any other immigrants that is not the whole story. There are many just as there are here; whom immigrate and work very hard to do just as other immigrants before them, to make a better life for their families, to allow their children to go to school and do what they themselves could not, and not just to avail themselves of social programs.

I think the U.S. has many problems in this world, at this time, however, it is the most wonderful country in this world. I have lived for extended periods of time in many areas of the U.S. and I was treated with respect in all of them. For the most part, our people are allowed equal access to benefits, can create their own success, and treat women and children with as much respect as any other country in the world. Because of the freedom we enjoy to express ourselves, we tend to complain...a lot, this might make it tempting to believe we are not prospering as much we would like, but just the fact that we are free to complain says a lot. The internet and dozens of communication opportunities, we are constantly informed about tragedies that went unnoticed in the past. (con't)

Welcome back!
CANADA. The Inuit and Dene, plus military personnel and natural resource researchers inhabit the north.
Canada has had same-sex marriage for years. We've had full Medicare for everyone on Canadian soil for decades. A new mother gets a year off work and is guaranteed a job of equal value/pay when she returns. Paternity care is widespread and available to all fathers, including adoptive ones. I live in a small city that has two large universities and so many community colleges that I've lost track. Canadians are welcomed warmly all over the world, and our politics are acceptable and deemed fair everywhere. I have never lived in fear. I don't even know a single person who has a gun. That's why I think Canada wins.

Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland
All of these countries have the freedom/education to learn and grow, respect women as equals, medical for all, freedom from religion, etc. However, they also leave it up to the rest of the world to take care of the bad guys.

Asian countries just do not factor in as there is not equality/respect for women in most of them and religion is too involved in their governments. Education does not appear to be a major factor in many of them either.

But as has been said above, everywhere has their own set of problems.
Everywhere has immigrants, poverty to some extent, fear of those that are different.

Canada is pretty well rounded, yet they (not all who live there) have a fear of the US and our military.

Since past, in present and in future the most civilized country is ,was and will be India ,the points which have been enlisted above are not completely responsible for making a country civilized, The word civilization is taught to the world by Indian culture and is completely based on 'Sanskar' which could be understood by an Indian only.If any one wants to learn bout being a civilized than can Search on web about Sanskar and Indian culture.
