Why is literature such an important subject in school?

Don't get me wrong, I love books of my choice but not the old, old books that my teacher forces my to read. why is it so vital to read those books?

Report as

Because reading increases our knowledge through learning how to read well, being able to grasp concepts and ideas in literature, and being able to view all aspects from the book. Ranging from the author's point of view to the readers point of view. Reading literature also increases your vocabulary range.

Sophomore in high school?
Report as
12.9 reading level is the level of a student in their 9th month of their senior year. that's the highest it goes. I am already there. do I really need to read more? I'm having trouble with the 400 year old plays and stuff

and yes, sophomore in highschool

Cool, good for you! :)
Well you don't have to IF your high school doesn't require it. Though It would be beneficial to to better your reading skills concerning your ability to in depth, grasp the concept and idea of literature. Since the high school literature seems to be a piece of cake for you, then I would suggest for you to try to tackle older literature publications. Such as plays (Shakespeare for example), or other older literature books. :)
Report as
it is not actually a piece of cake, the old language is very hard to comprehend
Report as
I may have some grammatical errors in what I just said, :/ my bad, if I did.
Report as
Oh I see, well since your teacher forces you to read the these old books, then it must be a requirement. So you will probably have to do them regardless... but just think of it as bettering yourself and increasing your reading, and comprehension skills!
It isn't vital, but it is some what important and definitely beneficial to read them, even if they are hard to read.

Because lots of words used back then aren't used so much now. However, there are some old books and writers I find good to read, such as Huckleberry Finn, and Of Mice and Men. (I know Huckleberry Finn wasn't a writer, I forgot the name of the writers I like. :3 shhh)

Older literature influences current literature. Certain themes are timeless and never go out of style. Give older books a chance. If you like Stephen King I'm sure you'll like Edgar Allan Poe.

edgar allen poe has some creepy writings. his writing "the pit and the pendulum" was actually interesting. it involved the Spanish inquisition.
Report as
Edgar Allan Poe wrote in a variety of styles. While he was particularly good at the creepy and macabre it was by no means the only thing he wrote. He also wrote stories that were light-hearted and comical, some that were satirical, and some that were aesthetic. He also invented the mystery.
Report as
my lit teacher said that his writings can be considered dark romantics and maybe a bit of gothic writing.
Report as
This is true of some of his works, and most of his better-known ones. Still, as I said, he wrote in a wide variety of different styles and some don't have that dark brooding quality.

The old books are the best ones. :/ You aren't giving them a fair chance. And those books you mention are not literature. That's like saying Twilight is great cinema. No, no, no. Those books are filled with the observations and thoughts of the world's greatest thinkers, the wisest people who ever lived.

I suffered from Romeo and Juliet, Taming of the Shrew, the scarlett letter and a whole bunch more. next year, I am going to take senior lit in my junior year. that is stuff like Macbeth, The Oddessy (or however you spell it) and Beowulf. that text is like 400 years old, i'll hardly understand a phrase

Because facts do not tell you how to live your life. Literature examines life, historical environments that those lives existed, and timeless truths that are still with us in fiction today - except that literature typically provokes you to contemplate whereas much fiction today has been dumbed down and easily forgotten - literature can change your outlook on life.

I could say the same thing about math. I mean why do we need to learn the old formulas if we have calculators.
