As an American of African descent, I want to know why there is such a discrepancy in the unemployment numbers for young men of my race

What are the causes for this in your opinion? Is it racism by employers or is it a cultural thing? Is it the lack of fathers in the home (70% are born out of wedlock now days, unlike just 40 years ago) Or is it the less emphasis put on education by their families? Or could it be the young men themselves who are taught to be victims causing their own demise? I want to help my family but need help finding the cause so it can be changed.

It could be one of many things or a multiple issues. I've read numerous studies children in any race have a higher rate of success than children raised by a single parent. It's sad that so many black children grow up in a single parent house, many very poor. I feel many are angry with their lives growing up and are very bitter. They don't know who to be mad at. I believe in some neighborhoods and in many schools(low class to middle class) kids who are smart and succeed are ridiculed. There's a lot of peer pressure to not be the nerdy smart kid. The ones growing up in bad neighborhoods have an even tougher time. Violence and crime all over the place. They have a much more difficult time. With the way this country is struggling many young people, regardless of race are having a difficult time finding jobs. This includes young people fresh out of college. I do believe/know there are people who are still racist and stereotype. They probably view all young black children as thugs, ghetto garbage, lazy, etc. It's a complex issue which there are no easy answers. It's sad and unfortunate.

That is about the most honest and truthful answer I have heard and I have been posing this question multiple times with multiple rude answers and each question got blocked. Funny how now that I have come out as an American of African decent, my question stays and I get honest answers. Yes racism is alive and well especially by those who do the name calling.
Report as
Back to your answer... We first have to be able to speak about this issue to solve it. That is becoming harder and harder to do with the race card being pulled. I thought the election of Obama was supposed to change this. It has only gotten worse. I am not blaming him for this. I am blaming the intolerant left who use him for their own agenda of shutting down conservatives.
Report as
The first thing that needs to change is getting fathers back in to their children's life's and getting the government out.
Report as
Before the welfare state, men stayed with the mothers and most often married them. Especially in the African American community. All this government/liberal/socialism is destroying families.
Report as
I'm being honest because I am. Has nothing to do with your ethnicity. It's a deep, serious issue. I also believe black conservatives in the spotlight are treated horribly. They are called vulgar names(like slave, traitor, white wanna be) and reserve numerous threats. Look at Dr. Carson, Allen West and the actress from Clueless(can't remember her name). They have been blasted by people on social networks and the media has been all over them. It's almost like if a person is black they are supposed to be a democrat and take the handouts. The Democratic Party uses the black population and makes them dependent on the government. I wish people realized Dr. Martin King was a republican. I feel the Democratic Party has held black people down and has hindered their ability to succeed and strive on their own. It's a tragedy.
Report as
Jermey I apologize if you thought I was talking of you. You are the one being honest. I was speaking of the people I dealt with last evening asking this same type of question but them assuming I was white and calling me names. (DDX for one) Thank you for your honesty and in realizing the true cause of this disparity. It would be great if the country could have this conversation without pulling the very old and sick race card.
Report as
I agree. I am sick of the race card. It gives all the genuine, honest, hardworking and moral filled black people a bad reputation.

Truthfully it's a little of every thing parents have to push there kids to finish school but kids now in days do what they think is best. Society don't care any more your like many are a number figure to the rest of the world. Do your best keep your head in place move to a middle class home don't race your kids in the hood and you have a better change then the hood or getto.

How do some people overcome being raised in the ghetto? I do think family plays the biggest part in helping young people reach their full potential but it is hard when the media and politicians make minorities out to be victims. We are victims of our own doing now days.
Report as
It is a cycle that is supported by government programs, a lack of education, and families that do not know any other culture than what they were raise in.
Report as
I agree
Report as
I just want to break this cycle. Conservatism seems to be the only way out of this mess, where we each take responsibility for our own life's instead of being a victim that needs the government to fix things for us. I want my family to not be victims but instead be leaders. It is just really hard when the media plays such a big part in people's life's, telling them they have it rough and they understand and the government will help you because you are unable to help yourself. Well they don't come right out and say it but it is implied.
Report as
I consider myself a democrat. My views are moderate on most social programs and I do not follow party line concerning most issues. I can have quite liberal opinions at times and very conservative view at other times. I feel that there should be a five year limitation on welfare for a life time unless the person is truly disabled. Almost everyone has the ability to work. If they receive welfare I think they should have to work at least 40 hours a week doing public service. Maybe it would in courage people to find employment and make more money. They would pay taxes and SS and be required to go to job interviews. Also submit to drug test.
Report as
I agree but the Democrat Party doesn't. I used to be a Democrat voter but have seen how they truly are "holding the black man down" as we used to say. The Republicans are not conservative enough for me but I feel we don't have much of a choice anymore. Both parties are corrupt and will bend which ever way the wind blows.
Report as
You are absolutely correct I don't trust any of them. I'm thinking of going independent, but there seems to be no choice for me in either party.
Report as
I have heard of many people wanting to be independents. Maybe that is the answer.

I am a merchant marine working in the oil field in the gulf of Mexico. I am white and I work and live with a number of African American. Most of them have strong family back grounds and were brought up by both parents. The number is much lower for the individuals that did not. Out here you really don't run into racism.

I think your last choice about young men taught to be victims is the most likely. They get this attitude from their family and peers. I don't think discrimination plays a big part anymore. I have hired many people; it was always hard to find a qualified black person ( yes we had quotas). In addition if one met minimum requirements, they generally couldn't spell or had bad grammar during interviews. If I still allowed them to take a test, they would not do well. My husband also hired many people for electrician jobs. He rarely got a black to even apply. To meet minority quotas, he was able to hire white women. So break the cycle. There are many manufacturing job openings. Vocational schools are an alternative to college for blacks who may not have good enough SAT scores to be accepted.

Why are they failing these tests? All Americans have the opportunity to be educated and I most certainly do not think we have lower IQ's so what is causing the problem of them not being knowledgable? Who or what is causing some of us to not put a value on education?
Report as
I don't think it has anything to do with IQs. It has to do with lack of learning skills taught early on by family and then no driving force to excel once they're in school. The grammar is learned from their environment. Why they don't re-learn from teachers is a big question. Same with spelling. This problem is not just that race, but just more prevalent I think. BTW- after interviewing hundreds of people over many years, my husband hired only one black male and one black female in his organization of 125 electricians.

I think in young African American males, doing well in school is not socially acceptable. There is no "street cred" in it. They aren't shown enough positive examples of what doing well in school can do for them. The rewards are not instantaneous so they don't try.

To answer this is to answer with racism. To catagorize African American males as having a higher unemployment rate as a class is racist. It might be that there are cultural differences and values in African Americans, but it is not related to the color of their skin.

That's crazy to say that the statistics put out by the Dept of Labor are racist.
Report as
The government breaks down the numbers. So they are the ones promoting racism by what you state. What is it called when they break it down by income or by sex? These numbers should matter to all Americans. When they say unemployment is... Lets say 7.9% but 5% for men and 9% for women is that wrong? Or how about it being higher for no college degree versus having a degree? Or lets say 7.9% for all but black men between 18 and 25 it is 50%? Or all blacks it's 14%...that's racism just stating facts or is it racism that causes this fact?
Report as
That is breaking down numbers, not making generalizations about men because of the color of their skin. And I don't care who does it, it's racism. www.thefreedictionary.com/racism
rac·ism (r s z m) n. 1. The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability...
Report as
Well that is what I am asking...why are these numbers so high? Is it due to racism or skin color or is it our political culture that rewards unemployment via no one needs to take responsibility for their own life because the government's got your back and will pay you to stay home. Have a baby? Don't worry about supporting them. The govt has that covered too!
Something needs to change and I think it has to start in each of our families, black, white or green. We all play a role in the demise of our nation. We need to start electing people who don't coddle us with promises of help. We need leaders to show us the way to helping ourselves and in turn helping our nation to be strong once again. Calling people racist has got to stop. It in itself is racist.
Last night I had multiple questions blocked posing this same question. I was called every name in the book for questioning why such high numbers before being blocked. Today I pose the same question as an American of African decent and I get honest answers. Funny how that racism thing works. Lol
Report as
What you talked about has nothing to do with the color of your skin, every race has people who think they are entitled to be supported if they don't want to work. Every race has people who just keep having babies they can't care for and live on the public dole. I feel pity for those who will never have the feeling of turning on the light and saying to themselves, "I paid for that bill, I bought the electricity, I paid the rent, I bought the food." That is a feeling of self-respect that one has to work to earn--lacking that motivation has nothing at all to do with race. Why should we stop calling people who are racist what they are--racists? Calling someone that killed a person in cold blood a murderer does not make you a murderer. Calling a person that attaches specific attributes, characteristics, or anything else based on the color of their skin a racist does not make one a racist. You may think it, but that does not make it so.
Report as
I was not attaching skin color to the high unemployment numbers- the govt was doing it. I am questioning their results as why should their race make a difference as it obviously does by their numbers.
We're going in circles here. People need to be able to talk about these problems if we are ever to solve them. Walking on egg shells or skirting the issues because the intolerant left will and does scream racism every time a person's race is brought up or if the people being discussed are a minority, is their way if shutting the conversation down. I am really beginning to wonder why they do this. What are they afraid of?
Report as
We both agree about how all people gain self respect.

Racism, by and large is dead except in the minds and attitudes of some of the former victims. I personally have no problem with black white hispanic whatever. I have a problem with attitude and people who feel they are entitled to something. Largely I think you can blame mainstream media and marketing for creating an image that keeps these people from wanting to look forward. They are trapped where they are by strong ecenomic and political forces. You have to swim upstream in a very strong current to get out of the quick sand that is the Ghetto imagery, of Pop stars and gangsters.

I think it is ALL of those points that you mention but I think racism is not as much of a factor. To the extent that racism is a problem it is the chicken and egg analogy. By that I mean that because of the affect of the other factors employers in some instances think that all blacks are damaged.
I think for the most part that the people involved in hiring are wise enough to find the best people for the job regardless of race.

I think also that some people are too comfortable in their poverty.
Report as
That sort of comfort is sadly probably true. That results in the lazy labeling.
I have to think of my dad who together with my mother were at poverty level in the mid to late 1930's but rose much above that. He started on a county road crew and left for an apprenticeship to become a millwright with ALCOA. He only had a seventh grade education and he grew up on a farm without a dad. Some people just have more drive to better themselves than others do. I know mine is highly anecdotal evidence.

I could write a ten page essay on this subject, but it would be discarded as the rantings of a racist.the cold hard truth is always challenged in that way.racism is part of the problem, but the lack of strong role models, and ignorance due to poor education is a huge part also.

What I've seen (as white person) is that blacks who do what anyone does to become successful, (work hard in school, speak proper English, ect.) Are treated mercilessly by the blacks who, for whatever reason, are not doing those things. In particular, telling them they are less "black"and shunning them. Obviously there is racism too, but the more blacks who get themselves into more power positions, the more opportunity there will be for the rest of the community. In my opinion, the only thing holding any person back is thinking they are a "victim". No white person in their right mind is going to hire a less competent person because they are white. there will always be idiots, black or white.
