What's the copyright status on historical works?
I'm currently planning a writing project which I've split into three sections and I would like to introduce each section with a quote. The first is a short excerpt of Lord Byron's poem, The Corsair; the other two are quotes taken from Captain Johnson's A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the Most Notorious Pirates. The original owners of these quotes are long dead. So my question is, do I need to get permission to use these quotes, even if I include under them exactly where I found them and who said them? If so, how do I go about doing that?
Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance
