How long should you let muscles rest after workouts for maximum growth?

For an average adult male training naturally, 48 to 72 hours rest is recommended for best growth. So let's say you train chest and arms one day. You can train shoulders and back the next day, and legs the day after that, and your chest and arms will have had 48 hours to recover. You can take the next day off (3 days on, one off) and train chest and arms on the 5th day, having given them 72 hours to recover.

Personal trainers recommend about 24 hours or a day.

probably 3 days. Still move them, or else they will hurt even more... but no maximum work outs. It will let the pain die down.

24 - 48 hours. But I wouldn't work out that muscle group again until you're either feeling no pain or very minimal pain.
