Because it looks like a pine cone on the out side and some thing about an apple on the inside

Because the word pine is kind of a tree and its form like a tree and it taste like apple

That is it's original name because it was something to do with their reproductive organs from a conifer tree given to them by European explorers and also for their resemblance to pine cones with their hard petals....
