204/12 = ?

Multiply that number by 40, and there's your answer.

What'd you come up with?

Why do you do it that way?

Well, the initial dividing, the 204/12, is going to give you an hourly wage.
Then if you multiply that hourly wage, by the new hours (40), you get how many dollars he made for working 40 hours.
My way is much simpler, and got the same answer you gave.

Divide $204 by twelve, to get the amount of money per hour; then multiply that by 40 to get the 40-hour week.

Set up a ratio:
You say $204 is to 12
as $x. is. to 40.
You write 204/12 = x/40
12x = 204(40)
12x = 8,160
/12. /12
x = $680. ANSWER
(please comment if you have ?'s)
