A christian based religion which formed during the Reformation period in Germany. It's main advocate (there were many) was a former catholic monk called Martin Luther who opposed popery and other church practices like the selling of indulgences and church high life. He "protested" and put his life on the line (he could of been burned as a heretic)
Martin Luther nailed a list of complaints on the Pope's front door & the Protestant movement began. It then divided into many: Baptists, Methodist, Church of Christ , & many others too numerous to name.
The Protestants were people who protested certain practices and positions of the Roman Catholic Church. It is not a religion, nor a denomination, but a description of the people who disfellowshipped from the Catholic Church and pursued Christianity under a slightly different set of beliefs, positions and practices. It includes many denominations, but does not describe Eastern Orthodox or other, older divisions (such as Ebionite, Maronite or Coptics). The Protestant movement dates from Martin Luther, and the 15th century. it is primarily a European phenomenon.
