Do animals have souls?

I know it may be a strange thing to ask but the convo came up between my gf and I so I would just like to know your opinion.

Report as

First one must know what defines a soul. In simple terms it is the principle of life, feelings, and emotions.

Animals, such as ourselves, have life (obviously) and carry emotions. While emotions are stronger in other animals, we all still have them. The only argument in this is that humans are the only animals known to have morality AND instinct whereas other animals just have instinct.

To answer your question: Overall, yes, animals have souls- all of them (including us).

But people aren't animals. The're people and if you think that a monkey is a person than why can't it walk freely on the streets like normal people?
Report as
Oh my goodness NO! Not in the least! I truly believe animals have souls. In fact, it is amazing to me that someone would think they don't. No, not mocking you at all. No worries. I do know they have souls. I will stand this ground until the day I die and see all my animal friends in heaven. :)

P.S. I really liked the fact that you gently pointed out we are animals too. Mammals to be exact. Good job! :)

You don't understand. Humans are classed as animals. Specifically we are humans. I'm not saying a monkey is a human- a monkey is a monkey.

they are still not animals. humans have free will while animals dont

Archer19, I respect your thought and your understanding of the question. I am not challenging you. We could go back and forth on this topic for eons. This is a subject that most have a definitive feeling about. As I do respect yours, please open your mind to the thought of mine. There are many differences that separate humans from other animals. 1. We have to ability to see into the future. Ex: If we litter today, it will hurt the planet. 2. We have the ability to reason and problem solve. Ex: The reason we have water is because it is 2 parts hydogen and 1 part oxygen. 3. We are able to be greedy. Ex: It doesn't matter that our needs are food, shelter, and water... "I" want mine to be better than yours. 4. We have the ability to take more than we need, not caring about any other living animal on this planet. Ex: What we are doing to walk on the "streets." Streets are only good for humans. Not the earth or anything else.

no, animals do not have souls, as the soul is what gifts us with our free will and thereby the ability to sin or do God's will. Animals are not made in the image of God, and so were not given this ineffable gift of a soul.

We, humans, are animals.
Report as
That's what I was thinking. But she seems to think otherwise.
Report as
no, we are not animals, we are quite separate.
Report as
I thought that they had souls, emotions, but didnt have a spirit, because our spirit came from God?
Report as
We are classified as animals. We are the most advanced, yes, that is what separates us from the others, but in simple terms we are animals.
Report as
No, we are not animals, not by any stretch, I don't care what science based in atheism wishes to classify me as, but I am by no stretch, an animal, nor are you. Animals do not have a moral guidepost, animals cannot build civilizations, animals cannot create the intricacies of art, nor the incredible idealisms of philosophy. Human beings are human beings, not animals, we are a separate class or life.
Report as
It's not "science based atheism" it's a fact that we humans created long ago when we were ALL believers in God.
You are still classifying- as far as taxonomy goes we ARE animals, like it or not.

We are multi-cellular, we reproduce sexually, we are consumers, we have parts that specialize in different things that set us as unique (thumbs)-- we are animals.
Report as
We are Human.
Report as
Yes, we are humans in the animal kingdom.
Report as
But that isn't what makes an animal an animal, an animal is a creature driven solely by instinct, plain and simple. We are not that way, we are different from animals. While we are still creatures, beings that were created by God, humans are different from animals, just as a tree is different from a bush. They have some characteristics that tie them together, but they are separate from each-other completely.
Report as
Sorru to intetruped you two, preppy and thatgirl, but lets get back to the question at hand, animals do or do not have souls? I love animals and my dog and cat both show emotion, whats up?
Report as
Animals do not have souls, a spirit, as in, the wisp of life that generates emotions and habits, which are instincts, is within all of us. A soul is the breath of life which God gave only to human beings. We are the only thing here, that God breathed life into, we are separate from all other creations, set aside to be their protectors.
Report as
@preppyboy

We have instincts too along with emotions and morality

@mystic00

You believe what you want, but I say animals DO have souls- they have emotions and personal feelings just like us.
Report as
well thatgirlmarz, I say you're absolutely unequivocally wrong.
Report as
in regards to animals having souls.
Report as
You know one does- any other animal can have feelings and you know this just by watching them. You see them get excited when you come home, you know they're content when they are with you or their own, you know they can have fear towards something; and it's those emotions (while they aren't very complex) that drives them towards instinct rather then morality.

Preppyboy (I don't know you name), I respect your beliefs and that is all I have to say to you on the subject as I see you are unwilling to accept what I have to say.
Report as
no, I accept what you say, but I also realize your premise is incorrect. Humans are not animals, animals do not have souls. Animals have a material spirit, a temporary flame of life granting them instinct and emotion, but not the free will which only a soul can give. You are beating a horse that is long dead instead of debating the topic at hand. I already stated that animals feel emotion, that isn't disputed.
Report as
Wow you two really kept it up for a while. But in the end I still think I stand my ground in agreeance with preppyboy.
Report as
Spot on GirlMARZ! Trust me when I say Preppy's arrogance will never allow him to accept the fact that humans are animals, so I wouldn't waste to much time on changing his mind.
Report as
TheguyWthefro8
I'm with preppyboy. So thatgirlmarz if animals did have souls how would they pray to God since they obviously cannot communicate the way that people do and since they cannot read? They would all go to hell because they wouldn't be able to use the one and only way to get to heaven (wich is through Jesus Christ)and God wouldn't send souls to hell that cannot grasp the understanding of his holiness.
Report as
@TheguyWthefro8

I'm especially not going to argue about anything you just said there, because it doesn't make sense along with the fact that you are digging deeper into a matter of religion. As much as I'd love to argue about it with you I know it's not going to get anywhere progressive.

Please don't comment on this anymore, thank you.

TheguyWthefro8
So that's it you're giving up. Because you are being selfish and discarding the fact that there is a Holy God so that you can dwell happily in immorality. But one day when you die you will burn and wish that you had repented if you keep thinking that way. Just think 70 to80 years on earth or eternity in paradise your decision.

Do people have souls? What is a soul? Can you explain it to me? Speaking metaphorically, everything with a personality has a "soul". But as for a real supernatural part of ourselves, you have to prove that even exists in any way first. It's all just wishes....

Can an animal become a Christian? Believe not. Otherwise they would have a form of communication like how people do. But they don't.

But can animals ACTULALLY pray to God? (not as a dog trick) nope. There fore cannot get to heaven through Jesus Christ. So therefore if animals did have souls they would all go to hell and why would God want to send a bunch of souls that could not grasp the understanding of his existence to hell?

Hi ProdigyScar. If one is of the Christian faith, he or she adheres to the teachings & principles of the inspired Word, the Bible. If not, there are several differing opinions. If Christian, one must remember that the scriptures by means of inspiration from God (2 Timothy 3:16) were penned in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek (mainly written in Hebrew & Greek). Today there are many translations in which some have removed original words such as "soul" once translated and replaced them w/ other terms (i.e at scriptures such as Genesis 1:21 some translations render the term living "creature" instead of living "soul" etc. When writing about the soul, the Bible writers used the Hebrew word ne?phesh or the Greek word psy·khe?. When you examine the way “soul” or “souls” is used in the Bible, it becomes clear that this word refers to (1) people ~see Genesis 46:18, (2) animals ~see Numbers 31:28 & Revelation 16:3 , or (3) the life that a person or an animal enjoys~see Genesis 35:16-19; Exodus 4:19 & Ezekiel 18:4. Also see Joshua 11:11 which refers to souls being struck by the edge of the sword (this displays that the soul in this verse is shown to be touched by the sword). Hope this clears up any confusion. As the scriptures show, we should reason on the scriptures (see Acts 17:2). PLEASE view these sscriptures w/ your personal copy of the Bible! These were just a few of the many scriptures that touch on the soul and what or who are considered souls. I would love to hear your thoughts.

Report as
In the Bible, "soul" is translated from the Hebrew ne'phesh and the Greek psy·khe'. I apologize, I noticed question marks in the previous comment I submitted.
Report as
To Assuredpromises: Your scriptures that you posted are very interesting. First of all though, the scriptures Revelation 16:3 and Numbers 31:28 I believe because the way they are worded are not referring to animals as souls. I'm trying to understand all that you are saying but just so we're clear do you believe animals have souls?
Report as
Hi Prodigy Scar. Please accept my apology for the late reply (I have not been on ask.com in a while). I believe what the Bible teaches. That being said, I believe that animals are souls. I do NOT believe that animals have souls. Revelation 16:3 (KJ or King James) reads: "And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea (the Christian Greek Scriptures show animals to be souls). In Greek the word here is psy·khe?. KJ, AS, and Dy render it “soul.” Some translators use the term “creature” or “thing.” Numbers 31:28 (KJ or King James) reads: "And levy a tribute unto the LORD of the men of war which went out to battle: one soul of five hundred, both of the persons, and of the beeves, and of the asses, and of the sheep:" This Hebrew scripture speaks of a tax or a levy for God to take away from the men of war who went out on the expedition one soul out of the 500, of humankind and of the herd and of the asses and of the flock. This scripture refers to animals as souls as well. There are other scriptures as well that show what the Bible teaches about the term "soul". The scriptures clearly show that "soul" in the Bible refers to people, animals, and life as a person. Please see Ezekiel 18:4 (this shows how soul refers to the life of a person). Hope to hear from you soon!
Report as
So are you saying that you believe animals have spiritual souls or that the word souls is referring to them as living beings?
Report as
I believe what the Bible teaches when it refers to "souls" as animals, humans, and life as person. One must aways consider the context. I do NOT believe that animals have souls but rather that they are souls because this is what a close examination of the holy scriptures reveals (view the scriptures in the previous postings please). When an animal is alive,it is a living soul. When an animal is dead, it is a dead soul. When a human is alive, the human is a living soul. When a human is dead, the human is a dead soul.

First of all, the bible is the wrong reference to use for this question. The bible was written in the bronze age for bronze age people and thus their perception of a soul is a reflection of their bronze age technology.
The problem revolves around the definition. For you to define anything you need to measure it using some kind of universally accepted standard. Since the soul cannot be measured then how do you know it even exists? Does it exist only because someone told you it does? My guess is that you were TOLD it exists and that is why you believe. Try the following declaration to see if it makes sense to you..."Because there is no tangible(physical) method of defining a soul using current technology, questions about what has or has not a soul are meaningless" Note that I am not saying that a soul does not exist. What I am saying is that the current definition is too ambiguous and not based on data or experimentation and is thus meaningless. Just think about it.
