What's a good tip to leave a waiter?

I usually tip between 20%-25% and if you're absolutely fantastic I will give you 30%.

Report as

I totally agree with your tip practices!
We leave 20-25% for average to good service, and leave 30% for excellent service. Many of our friends (adults, btw) do this as well.
The reasoning is that since their tips are now subject to income tax, just like any straight wages/hour they receive, most restaurants must assume a 10-15% tip (may vary by state, I think) for every meal tab that the server delivered. (Yes, their computerized cash registers keep track, per server.) They have to do this in order to deduct FICA and other taxes from the server's paycheck. Then the server's yearly income taxes must also be calculated on them receiving all these 15% tips -- whether they actually received them or not.
Some people tip less than 15% and some cheapskates don't tip at all. The server winds up paying income tax on money he/she never got!
Since I've paid my dues as a server in the past, I always encourage people to tip 20%, at a minimum, for decent service.
It's just fair, I think, and generally a 5% addition to a tip is peanuts on my end.

If it's the same waiter that said he was trying to impress you a while ago give him 20%. ..... Did you go back to see him? ;)

chou's answer pretty much what I would recommend! Having been a waitress during College I know how iffy tippers can be, and how hard a good waitperson works!:-).
There is one thing I will add; those few horrible servers who don't try at all ( different from one who's learning but still trying), should not be tipped at all, they need to be weeded out! Just as those who are outstanding should be recognized for it by great tipping and a compliment to the manager!:-).

Okay, thank you! I appreciate it! I went to a restaurant where I was sitting down for 30 minutes without anyone serving, but I tipped the waiter because it wasn't his fault. I'm guessing everyone is assigned to a section, and a waiter from a different section took care of me. ^_^
Report as
That's usually not the waiters fault, but rather management's not doing their job making sure all sections are covered properly:-(. I would have done the same and tipped the waiter:-).

Depending on service I'd go 15-25% if the service and waiter was good

what they have earned due to the quality of their service. the reason you didn't go get fast food is because you wanted to have good service from a real person. if your server was a jerk, and spoke to you like you were and idiot because you didn't see the 47 item salad dressing list --- they didn't earn the "average" 15%. if your server got the crap shift and has fourteen tables and one cook, and still keeping glasses full and something close to a smile on their face---- tip them as much as you can afford (and maybe buy them a drink if you ever see them off shift), and if your server doesn't make eye contact with you, walks by your empty glass six times to hang out with buddies two tables over and scoffs when you ask them for another 2 oz. of tartar sauce---- that is a bad server, they haven't earned a good tip (and frankly, it is insulting to the servers who have to do things like fill the bad servers salt shakers because they always skip out on it for the bad servers to get good tips)

If my order is $10 and less, I will leave them $2.50. If my order is between $10 to $15, I will leave them $5. If my order is between $15 to $20, I will leave them $7.50. Between $20 to $25, that will be $10. And so on.

Here's a tip..."TIP!"

If you can afford to go out to eat, you can afford to leave a tip for the person waiting on you. Do you think you're entitled to free service These people have to make a living. Put yourself in their shoes, what would YOU expect You're NOT just paying for food. YOu didn't have to buy it, cook it, plate it serve it, or clean up after it. If I get GREAT service, I tip 25%, good service gets 20%, mediocre service = 15%, poor service = 10%, horrible service = 2 pennies.

I and some of my friends do not prefer % as we always give whatever comes to our mind and we have never calculated the %. If your total bill is $1000, then you need to pay him $250, I do not think this is correct.
