I would avoid the "egg laying" breeds, as they tend to be high strung and lighter in body weight, making them more likely escape artists. The so-called "meat" ducks are heavier and calmer. The white ones are pretty, but will be more easily noticed by neighborhood dogs, cats, and other predators. Avoid Muscovy ducks as pets; they are ill tempered. I would get Mallard, Rouen, or perhaps the Khaki Campbell. Swedish blue ducks are also attractive. Be aware that ducks need to be confined most of the time; they can be very messy, running everywhere and pooping moistly as they go.
