Is it okay to not celebrate your Birthday?

Dating back to since I was young, I never celebrated the occasion. (Mainly because we couldn't) Now, Ever since coming to America, People somewhat "Question" why I don't celebrate it. Is it okay to not celebrate the occasion? Furthermore, If you feel like answering this, Why do people celebrate their birthday's in America? Is it celebrated in other countries?

When you get my age , you start counting backwards ! We don't celebrate anymore . Maybe a nice dinner out is all .

I don't celebrate my birthday. Its not that uncommon, altough im gonna try to do something since this year is my 16th birthday
