How do I get my shihtsu to get more playful?

He gets the ball when I throw it to him, when I tell him to drop it he does, but when I get the ball, he bites me. I take the ball very calmly, but when he bites my hand, I just take a break. I have no Idea why he's not playful like other dogs. Help?

When he bites you, firmly say no. Take the ball & walk away. Dont talk to your dog during this time & dont make eye contact either for 5 minutes. Then Come back & play again. If he bites you again repeat the above procedure. Do this 4 or 5 times at a time. If the dogs smart he will learn bite = no play. Good luck.

Well if he's friendly in every other way & loving to you then maybe he is just possessive over his ball. If thats the case just make sure no children try to take his ball. Has he a beautiful nature otherwise.
I use to walk a shiztu daily & one day after 15 months of daily walking 5 days a week, she grazed my hand as she went to bite me for no reason so I then refused to walk her. She was a free indoor roaming pet in an aged care home where I worked. As I had to report it & she had shown aggressive behavior towards a couple of other residents, she then went to live with one of the nursing staff as she wasn't trustable to have around people at the home.

It may be the fact that he doesn't really see you as the alpha dog. Professional training may correct this. If it doesnt then you will have to decide if you want to put up with his biting you.

I don't know how to solve this problem. Try taking him to a vet. He might have depression. ;););););)

Well you might want to consider training. They're are trainers at Petsmart. They train dogs and owners in groups. From what I've heard it's pretty cheep too I'm not sure.
