I have a basement window where it is large and has a crack to open the window half way open and im wondering if i ever get locked out side

and that is closed but not locked how do i open it without breaking anything... thanks

Wouldn't it be easier just to hide a key outside?

Depending on what sort of lock it has and if you locked it to begin with. it would seem to lock it would be futile if you can simply reach in and gently pull it up, or push it in, or pull it out. It really depends on how the window opens. My suggestion is you may want to replace that window and purchase a hide a key. They have some that look like rocks! Most hardware stores carry them. They're pretty cool! Don't stick your hand through the cracked window. You may break something... like your hand :(! Try to get it fixed and go hide-a-key style. Good Luck.
