Is it possible to stop thinking completely?

Our brains work 24/7 so its quite hard to say. you know what? try yourself! try to put mind in blank and tell me afterwards.

It is possible, what you are talking about is similar to meditation, it can take years of practice though to achieve.

that's not true, to stop thinking completely you have to be dead. Because you breath, you have to think to be able to breathe don't you?
Report as
Actually breathing is an automatic response, you don't have to think about it to do it. This is why people in comas, people who are brain dead continue to breathe. Heck you aren't thinking about breathing when you are asleep, your body just does it.

It is possible for some people; however I have never been able to do this as my mind works too fast and I think of too many things at once, it's quite annoying actually because I can't shut out the thoughts that keep me awake. I wish I could stop thinking sometimes, just for a bit, but it hasn't worked yet. Can you do this?

It doesn't help that I'm OCD and I always have to count things, like I'm going on a car trip and I'm counting signs, letters, license plates and I can't stop, I can't stop the numbers and the counting and the thoughts swirling around my head. Does this happen to you? Am I the only one?

I don't believe so. Even when you're 'not thinking' you're still thinking about 'not thinking'

I don't believe so like at times my mind can go blank, but not like completely with a blank feeling meaning that nothing is there inside. Because if that were the case I would no doubt go insane got to have me some thoughts in this noggin....

When you relax your grip on incessant chatter, then what is happening is you are dis-identifying with your self-image, with that which your 'think' is yourself. When the chatter is stopped, even for a second, then a change happens to your body, effectively reducing your tendency to chatter - your ego reduces and increasing your tendency to simply be present. This is the process of metamorphosis, or rising awareness, and it happens gradually as a growing process.
To want to reach the state of 'no thought', while one is still mostly identifed as the thinking one, just becomes another goal to be attained, and thus one can easily convince oneself that one can 'not think' and thus get confirmation for oneself that one has reached something else, another state. This is all confirmatoin for the existing self-image, and one gets trapped in another game to 'keep oneself alive' as the thinker.

I've tried to do this for many, many years... UNsuccessfully, I might add.
It IS possible by means of transcendental meditation, but it takes a loooong time & a great deal of discipline to achieve that state of complete "thoughtlessness." Must be nice 'n' peaceful, though... :)

Then the question would switch to: is it worth practicing that much just to stop thinking?
Report as
It depends on how badly you want to reach that state... and personally, I do think it's worth it. The "practice" is meditation, so you're in a very relaxed state as you work on achieving true thoughtlessness.
While I do believe it's worth it, I haven't meditated in a long, long time. I'd need to practice just plain old relaxing 1st -- I'm too wound-up to relax! :)

In a coma.
-
"A coma is a prolonged state of unconsciousness. During a coma, a person is unresponsive to his or her environment. The person is alive and looks like he or she is sleeping. However, unlike in a deep sleep, the person cannot be awakened by any stimulation, including pain."

The best idea we used. it is sleeping. Usually we should have 8 hours to sleep, but someone do not cherish their own bodies. only 7 hours or less, you do not have enough time, so everyday you feel tired. and also you looks older than other person. so take care.

To completely stop breathing you have to be dead... for example, even if you think that your not thinking about anything, you still technically are. Because breathing means that you have to think to be able to send the message from your brain to your lungs(?) so that you know to breath.
