Besides vacuuming, you can ensure that the cat does not leave fur everywhere by brushing him daily. This will ensure that the loose fur gets down at once and thus it won't be distributed all over the house.
I shave my cat every summer. It's cheaper to buy a set of clippers rather than take it to a groomer. If that's not an option, there are these great gloves you can get that have rubber beads on them that collect hair. That way you can just pet your cat and the cat doesn't have to be brushed (some cats don't like that).
