Minimum Wage in Idaho is $7.25 an hour, if you had a full time job 7.25 x 40 = $290 if the month has 4 weeks you would make $1160 a month.
Rent on a small two bedroom house $750.00 a month Electricity apx $100 a month if you have forced air natural gas heat Natural Gas apx $50 a month if you average it out over the course of the year Phone lets average this to about $75 a month, even though most people I know have better plans Water, Trash etc $30 a month So once you take all of that out of the $1160 a month you made you are left with about $155 dollars... oh wait we forgot to take out taxes.... you have no money left at all for food, gas, car maintenance, clothes for you or your kids, toilet paper, or any of the essentials for survival. Also note that the budget did not include cable tv or internet service, day care or anything else.
Single parents with minimum wages find it challenging to take their kids to the best schools, which is the most essential part of a child growth. This parent will also get challenge when the kid needs something and he/she is incapable of providing at the kid does not understand the parent's financial challenges.
nearly everything is more difficult for a single parent with a minimum wage job. child care, transportation, insurance for the transportation, electricity, ( use goes up for x people in the home) , food,( kids MUST eat nutritious, not fast, food) , clothing, ( kids need and go through more clothing) , housing, ( more bedrooms=more rent) , also, with a minimum wage job a parent usually can't afford the kind of quality in clothing that means they'd last longer and be less expensive in the long run. if the parent wants/ needs schooling to improve their economic situation, where do they find the energy and time? not to mention the money for extra child care, and gas, books and study materials.and G-D forbid a child should get really sick! what then, with all resources already stretched to the limit? being a single parent, even with a good paying job can be a real struggle. with all that said, it can still be a wonderful time and experience.a child can bring joy that nothing else can give. they can also teach an adult how to learn to be more responsible and mature. in fact many young single mothers will say the child saved them from their own self destructiveness. I guess the essence is this; it can be hard but if you persevere and make it, it will all be worth it.
