Has Mankind failed to clearly define it's purpose?

Report as

How can we "define" something we do not know?

Yes, and I agree. So, is this a failure in and of itself?
Report as
We can't fail at something we will never know the answer to. So far the only one we have is, to procreate. And we do that already.

Excellent logic:-)

The purpose of man is different for each person to define for themselves.

No mankind has taken over, destroying the world to a great extent in some places. We rob the earth of its minerals & salts to make money. We cut down Forrest's without regrowing. It is only now when problems are great that we are trying to make amends but in some areas I think we have left our run too late. Replacing what we take should have been common sense but at the time I think the $ signs distracted us from giving back from whence we took. I'm not a greenie as such but I do believe in only using what you need. I believe we should have planned to leave our future descendants more than what they will inherit from us.

This is how I have felt since a child.. Seeing these truths you speak of.. With most not listening
Sadly..We are a consumption species

Throwaway mentality. Buy bigger, better more expensive each time. Nothing is ever kept long enough to wear out. On a whim its replaced. Take furniture, No thought as from where it came & no thought of recycling it. Just to name one flaw in our selfish ways.

The purpose of mankind has been defined. I defined it... I know that sounds ridiculous but it really took a whole lot of time and research to define it. The purpose of our lives is to create ever-increasing happiness and prosperity for all life and existence in order to bring meaning, beauty and glory to this universe of matter and space. We are to become rich in all things, including love, peace, knowledge, happiness, finances, and much more, and we are to help others to become rich in all of these things. Our happiness and prosperity increases as we make life better for ourselves and others. We are to help other people, help animals, help the planet, and make life full and rich in all things for all life.

Yes, I could accept your definition as true. I was however looking for what could qualify as a broadly agreed upon philosophy. I noticed you had a very fair question removed earlier. I had the displeasure of reading a terrible response before it was removed.

Can it be a failure if was forethought?
Report as
Individually yes. Collectively we are destroying our own planet. The only way the true purpose of humanity can be realized is to eliminate sin and start over.
Report as
In every possible scenerio, the elimination of sin must conclude with the removal of all persons since none are truly innocent. Who then would be left to begin anew with?

The purpose of mankind can never be realized because of sin and death

What kind of confused stance is this? Purpose relies on death, or the lack of death? Like it's dependent on one or the other??

Life is always too short no matter how long you live if you die at the end

It is what we do in the time we are here as to whether we are here long enough or not. To impact on others in a positive way is to enhance all concern's quality of life. Sadly this doesn't happen often enough.
Report as
It doesn't happen often enough because we die too soon :)
Report as
We're living longer than ever before. And with improved science funding and medicinal research, we'll keep living longer and longer. Aubrey de Grey's prediction that the first person to live to 1,000 is alive today is probably close to reality.
Report as
The purpose of mankind can only be realized if every man individually lives for eternity

The pot does not define its purpose; that is the prerogative of the pot maker. Likewise, if the purpose is to contain liquid, it is up to the pot maker to put costly perfume, common oil or wine in some, and water or air in another. We are not all created alike, but we all have a purpose, and our purpose may not be exactly the same either; the commonality is found in the pot maker, for we are all alike to Him.

Beautifully worded.
Report as
I forget. Which is it? Is the glass perfectly made for the liquid? Or is the liquid perfectly made for the glass?
Report as
An existential question, Noveltman! For some may feel that the container is as important as the contents, because there is no ultimate purpose for either, and for others, the contents are more important than the container. I just finished digesting an excellent book, but the cover was exceedingly plain. I know many who buy based on cover art. Life is a projective test!

Nope. Just been blinded to it by the great deciever. Knowing our purpose is easy if you stop listening to the father of lies.

Jesus Christ, both man and God, revealed the purpose of mankind.
It is to love and know Him and let Him know and love us. He will help us to help others.

God tells us that we are to love The Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul, body and strength.
And to love your neighbor as yourself.
He also gave us the Great Commission: To go preach the Gospel, baptising the in the name of the Father, son and Holy Spirit!

What purpose could we possibly have? How could 7 billion individuals share a common purpose anyway?

Can you tell it's being wasted before you do or don't see positive results.
Report as
My follow up comment there was mostly tongue-in-cheek.

I feel like I'm wasting time almost constantly. Doesn't everyone? There is so much more I should have accomplished by now. But there's sleep, and ask.com, and housework... I'll never be Neil DeGrasse Tyson, so I'll never see results positive enough, lol.

We forget that to bring up a family is a life long role & one that is worth more than a diploma or initials before your name. Because there is not a lot of recognition for it we often feel like we should have done more with our life's.
Report as
That's an interesting take. I feel like being a family-oriented person used to be such a plus. Entire businesses would only hire ... well give the time... married MEN with families who were likely to be rooted down because of that. Now, anyone with a family, married or not, is a liability for companies. Kids get sick. They're less able to work late all days of the year. Much better to hire nice single, childless, individuals with no ties who can slave away more reliably.

And unfortunately we all die way too soon
