Why do we sometimes have to hit rock bottom before finding God ?

I know that's truly when I found him, when I thought that I had no one in the world to turn to,I poured my heart out to him,and that's when I found him.

When you're desperate and emotionally bankrupt enough to want anything, including a mythical deity, to make everything better for you, you'll make it up and believe it if it makes you feel better.

This is true. But do you feel there is other possible reasoning in this situation?
Report as
Possibly. Maybe if someone just thinks the idea of god(s) is cool they I suppose they may convince themselves that their particular god is real. There's also indoctrination. Someone may not be able to comprehend how the universe came about with the guidance of an intelligent being. There are many reasons out there as to why some people believe in a god but as for hitting rock bottom and then believing in a god, the emotional comfort it may bring is sufficient enough for some people to truly believe in it.
Report as
Of course there are other ways out of "the bottom". There's therapy, I think it'd be best to talk with someone close like a friend. Basically, it'll require a great mental change.
Report as
When I hit rock bottom I didn't believe in God,so there goes that theory, and where did this emotional comfort come from, that I did not have before ? thinking there is no higher power other then yourself is sad,sin of pride.
Report as
Once again you fail at understanding. When people don't believe, don't have any grounds in science, philosophy, or religion, and are severely depressed and just want everything to be better, those kind of people will sometimes turn to religion because they have nothing else to lose. You don't have to not believe for this to happen and the emotional comfort comes after you convince yourself that there's and infinite sky deity somewhere that loves you forever. Now go ahead and misunderstand yet another simple concept.
Report as
Lepp, you're one sad dude, the way you insult every Christian you can find... How come I never see you insult someone believing in Allah, or Buddah?
Get a life, brother...

Deb, I hear what you're saying loud and clear. You go, girlfriend!
Report as
Another epic fail from a christian trying to figure me out based solely on ask.com. I don't spend nearly enough time talking about Islam or Buddhism because they aren't the one insulting and annoying me, like deb here, and trying to shove their their bs dogma into laws and schools. Buddhists are actually nice btw. And your either ignorant or ignoring how deb has purposely insulted non beliers on so many occasions. Typical christian thing to just ignore te nasty things that your fellow christians do and pretend like atheists are so hateful and angry for no reason.
Report as
Easy answer, Lepp. Uncheck the mark under the things you're interest in - Spirituality, Religion, etc. That way you won't feel compelled to try to bring everybody down by calling them stupid and inept. You're not really interested anyway...
Oh, and I wasn't trying to figure you out based on Ask.com. I was figuring you out from all your rude answers...
Sorry, but that's the truth...
Report as
Like I said, keep ignoring all the insults and lies that deb tells about non believers and why I and so many others have no reason to respect her. You just keep validating my point. If you didn't have this assumption about me then you might notice that I don't go and insult every christian I see on here. There are hundreds of times when I see an incorrect answer and I just let it go and have actually had nice conversations with a very few christians. Of course you wouldn't know that. But keep believing your false assumption about me. If it helps you sleep tight.
Report as
Lepp, are you saying that it's Deb you "go after" and not all Christians? I didn't notice that...

Because when we have hit rocl bottom; God, is sometimes the only thing we have left that we can turn to.

And yet, He is the FIRST person we should turn to! ( and it would save a lot of heartache)..... But then thats how we learn His way is best.....

God wants us to be humbled. So we realize that we need Him in our lives. Often when we fall, it is because we are proud, before God can help us, we need to empty ourselves out so he can fill us up. unfortunately this usually only happens when we hit rock bottom.

That's beautiful that you found Him. I think maybe it's because you didn't seek him out til you needed Him. He's always been there.

You're right James he won't. And it's a journey. And I believe that's why we are here. To learn and to grow. To become better spiritually. And to just be good to one another!! This is a journey we all need to take together and love and compassion and understanding are key! Good luck in your journey. You are awesome!

Sometimes we need that hard fall to really see how much we need Him. We're a selfish species, and like to think that good things are because of ourselves, while forgetting the people and the God who lifted us up. So it's a "reality check" for us when we finally realize that we're not so self sufficient after all.

cause were to ignorant to turn to him when we have something and were dumb enough to use him as a last resort when we have things we dont worry about god most of the time and when it gets brought up we dont really think about it till theres nothing left to think about other then were did i go wrong and we realize it was not turning to him sooner

It's well explained in the poem footprints in the sand. Now that you've found him, enjoy the journey.

Probably so He can catch you before you "actually" hit the ground...some people need that extra boost from Him to stand on their feet again.

I've been there more then I want to admit (hitting rock bottom that is). I realize now that God has been there for me during my darkest moments and never left my side. I thank GOD I'm alive today. I want to tell you that it doesn't matter how you find GOD just as long as YOU DO. He never left your side... Stay strong and always believe in HIM. GOD BLESS YOU.

Well, me too! Isn't He wonderful?
I think I had to be empty of the world and all worldly answers before I could receive God. You see, now I KNOW that God is the answer. Because I had nothing else. I was empty. I knew there were no other answers. And I still know! I LOVE HIM!!!

Some can't humble themselves until they are truly broken. When there's no where left to turn is when they'll try looking for God for help. And when they find Him.

in my case. it was kinda like he was on the passenger side watching me drive....in the middle of the road, knocking down mail boxes, running over people crossing the street, all up on the sidewalk. but he was waiting. he was waiting on ME to say jesus please drive. i cant drive a lick...not a lick << (andy griffith). we dont understand his ways. but it is the end figure that is important. i do not yet call myself christian and i know i still have sin in my life. but he has me pointed in the right direction. we have a start.

When people are that desperate, they, for whatever lame reason think they're the only human left on Earth.

Coming up in the Feminist era, I was one of those women that could accomplish anything. ("I Am Woman, Hear Me Roar). Wait while I chop wood for the fireplace...

I almost did, too, till my world fell apart and I started asking "is this all there is?" "Is this what life is about?" Really hit bottom. Got divorced, became an alcoholic/promiscuous, lost my kids, and had no direction whatsoever. Long story short: Got saved about a year later, and Jesus made Himself real to me. He who is forgiven much, loves much. I fought the good fight - resisting the Spirit, till finally, even with the devil putting lots of ideas into my head, I figured I had nothing more to lose, so I invited Him in. It took that much for me to come to the point of asking Jesus for help. No way I would have done it before all that had happened. He changed my life and helped me to focus OUTSIDE instead of on my woes...
Auxarcs said it - we can be stubborn. Or we can be arrogant. But there is Someone there who wants us to turn to Him, and will be a very present help in times of trouble in our lives.

Marsch- I have made a mess of my life as well. I can hardly bare the reality I've created. I want that quick fix of booze. (not drinking) How long did it take before you felt any gratitude or joy? (selfish even now)
Report as
Mostly it was awe and curiosity at first. I wanted some of this, and I needed it badly. Started going to church, and met older mentors there. Felt really awkward... But started learning who I was in Christ and some of the things He had planned for me, and kept getting stronger and stronger in Him. Wasn't easy, with some of the losses I had. They were never turned around and I had to live with the consequences, which was pretty hard. But as I walked closer and closer to Jesus, I began to feel a purpose and a worth and most of all - real love. Still is wonderful, 30 years later.
Dottiee - you are on the right track, girlfriend. I know all about that quick fix... I also know I spent a lot of time in those rooms, if you get my gist. You know something interesting? After I'd been IN those rooms for awhile, I began to see God's purpose for me there! Not at first - big struggle - but later - He really used me there...I was in there one year when my son was killed in a motorcycle accident. I'm glad I had that support system already in place when that happened. So keep up the good work, Dottiee. God really does love you. I'm sorry you've had to go thru all this to get where you are now, but in the end, it'll be well worth it, girlfriend. I'll be praying for you - keep on posting, okay?

When we hit "rock bottom" we realize that there are no other options and truly accept God as the answer to our prayer. And that's when we start looking up to Him and reaching out to what he has in store for us.
