A chess tournament is held, and 32 students participate. The tournament will be single-elimination, which means that if a player loses a match, he or she will be eliminated. How many total games will be played in the tournament?

If I understand you well, and you mean that each two players will be playing against each others so the one loses get eliminated and one wins get qualified to the second round, then it will be like that;
32 --> 16 --> 8 --> 4 --> 2 --> 1
So there will be 5 games to be played.

This is wrong. If there are 32 kids participating in the first round there will be 16 games played in the first. In the second only 16 kids would be playing so there would be 8 games. In the third round 8 kids would be playing so there would be 4 games. In the fourth round 4 kids would be playing so there would be 2 games. In the fifth round 2 kids would be playing so there would be 1 game.

16+8+4+2+1= 31

But Winnithepooh ir right, What I meant by 5 is the number of rounds that will be played but each round will have certain number of games as cleared by Winnithepooh..
