What to expect in a Mormon church

My girlfriend has asked me to go with her to her Mormon church. I was wondering if there is anything "unusual" that happens there that does not happen in another church. Please keep in mind that I have not been to church of any religion in a long time, so a basic summary would be appreciated. For anyone who answered my previous question, I am glad to say everything went well. The missionaries were pleasant, and her parents really seemed to like me.

Well, you should wear a shirt and tie, first of all. Other than that, no swearing, making inappropriate jokes, or making rude comments. Just about the same as most churches. We have sacrament, where we eat bread and drink water at the beginning, but you really don't have to do that, just don't be shocked when you are offered it. Also, I don't know if you are staying the entire time or just sacrament meeting, but we have sunday school where all the youth go to a class, they will show you where it is, and then after that there is a separate class for young men, I suppose they will show you where that is, too. Other than that, be prepared to be asked about yourself and be smothered by people who want to make your experience comfortable. If you need to, it is totally acceptable for you to sit in the foyer the whole time. I hope you have a great time!

Thanks for the information. That seems to compare to what I read online, but I wanted to get it from a real person. I'm sure my girlfriend will say the same thing.

true and they believe in other followers other than the ones in the bible like jet adieus

Why don't you pray about it and ask God if its true. That what tens of millions of people did who became LDS.
When I first heard about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints I thought it was weird too. When I read the Book of Mormon while praying about it the testimony of the Holy Spirit made it all clear. You loose nothing by praying about it, right?

Uh. Have you EVER been to the Mormon church? There isn't a priest. People don't stand up and sit down, we just sit and listen. And we don't all give speeches, and he doesn't have to say anything. People give talks that are assigned in advance, he won't have to worry about that at all. He just needs to listen and not fall asleep. We don't do hail mary OR father prayer, we have individual and unique prayers that aren't said more than once. He won't have to worry about that eiether, other people will do that, and if he does get asked to do it, he can just say no thanks. Wow.

if she talks to you about being sealed watch what you say and do not sign the paper. Otherwise relax, enjoy, be prepared to be evaluated, and acknowledge the invitation to come back.

Talk about being sealed, sign papers? What in the world are you talking about? Where did you get so confused about what happens in an LDS church?
Someone has seriously misinformed you about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Why don't you find out what we really believe. www.Mormon.org is a good place to start.

Joe G,
Just go to church and simply enjoy the experience. Again, above all your other concerns, simply pray about it. Seek the council of God's Holy Spirit. You alone must decide for yourself what is true.
-
Others can only tell you what they have experienced, or what they have heard from others, but it is only by what you will feel from the Holy Spirit that all of this will have any real meaning, and from that you will gain a personal testimony of the truth.
-
Without that personal testimony nothing else matters, it's just people's differing opinions without it. With a personal testimony from the Holy Spirit that Jesus Christ is your Savior and His church has been restored, nothing can ever shake you or confuse you again.
-
It is my firm and sincere hope that you will seek a testimony through prayer of the Divine mission of Jesus Christ, and in the restoration of the Gospel in our time. May God grant you the peace and joy of a timely answer to your sincere prayer.
-
My deepest hope that your questions will be answered, and may I offer my admiration for your courage to seek to know our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Thank you for your continued advice. I don't know if it is the Holy spirit, but when I read a copy of the Book of Mormon given to me by my girlfriend, my mind does not wonder like it does when I read anything else. I asked this question because I had heard some strange things, and wanted to get an answer from real people, even if they didn't give real answers.
Report as
Keep in mind that the answers from other people will always be biased. Even those who love you, hope and want you to decide certain things in a certain way. And those who have unloving intentions toward you will lie and twist things to get what they want.
-
For your testimony to be complete, it must be between you and God foremost, and not just a social feeling between your loving girlfriend and her well meaning family. God will reveal Himself thorough His Spirit, though the spirit often uses good people to inform you and teach you at the right moment. The spirit will prompt you when what you are hearing or asking is true.
-
It is easy to know the promptings of the Spirit. The Holy Spirit brings a feeling of peace, the deceiver cannot bring peace. The Holy Spirit brings a clarity of understanding, a "big picture" perspective. The deceiver brings mostly doubt, and trivial bickering and debate.
-
Open your heart and your mind in sincere prayer, praying aloud if you are comfortable doing so. Ask God to reveal His truth to you. When you hear or think something may be true, take it to God in prayer and ask for a testimony of it if it is true.
-
Line by line, principle by principle, God's Plan of Happiness (the Gospel) will be revealed to your spirit, and its meaning and purpose will enlighten your mind. Be patient, be sincere, and above all other emotions, embrace hope, a hope that you will receive an answer to your prayers and questioning.
