First of all you need to attract them to your yard. You need a lot of seed, buy from a feed store. Get 50 lb bags of black oil sunflower seeds. Throw some in a bare spot so the birds can see it. A driveway will work. For a week or two toss out a coffee can of seeds until you have plenty of birds. Then hang your feeder and wean them off the seeds on the ground. Park your car inside.
Be consistent with bird food every day in the feeder and place a birdbath not too close but near the bird feeder and keep filled with water. Hopefully, both are in a nice quiet spot in the yard, away from activity.
I did same as Donald suggested to you. I kept putting seed in the yard and area to attract them, then I moved them to my feeding station and it has water close by for drink/bath. My next hope now is to get them to trust me and come rest in my hand and eat out of my hand.. anyone with suggestions how to get that? oh, I alos treat them with tiny chopped apples, grapes, different fruits, nuts, etc. Check ask.com before putting something out that you shouldn't.. I've learned that also... good luck birding!
