People have always been suspicious of other people who think differently or go against "the natural order of things". The people who usually find themselves the target of bullying are different in some way: physically, ethnically, religious beliefs, social class, or even just their acceptance or knowledge of popularly held ideas and opinions. The bully insults, harasses, and sometimes even physically abuses the target. This serves both to make the bully feel better about his own pathetic self esteem and to act as a warning to other potential free-thinkers they better get in line and accept the traditional view if they don't want the same treatment. Throughout history from Socrates to Jesus Christ to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. free-thinkers who go against the grain have always been persecuted. It doesn't take courage to beat someone down. It takes courage to stand up and take the beating for your beliefs.
