Why are women so objectified in the media today?

it is very difficult to find a music video that does not portray women as just bodies, makeup, appearance, or as arm candy for men. How has this happened in our society? we're supposed to have equality. Do you agree that this exploitation of women's bodies is disgusting and setting a bad example?

Because many young women allow themselves to be used this way. For money & stardom. Even if briefly. Men aren't entirely to blame, but some can be very convincing making women feel their only worth is on the surface. Young women need to carefully guard their reputations, self respect & behavior. It's all they will have left of any real value after their looks fade. Otherwise opportunists will happily take advantage, sometimes in very bad ways. Women s/b valued more in the entertainment industry for behaving like young ladies, not drunken frat boys. But too much of the public loves their car wrecks. Even when we don't like it, it gives us something to talk about.

Because women have sexy bodies... I'm a woman and I would rather see a naked female rather than a naked male. Men, no matter how toned or sculpted, will never be as hot as women. I think we should be flattered and happy that our bodies alone have such an effect on the people. You have to admit, it's pretty amazing. Women have a certain grace/beauty that a man can never have.

I am not going to be "flattered" that some men think that a woman's only worth is her body. I don't know about you, but I would like to be respected for my talents and ideas, not ogled by some men viewing me as a sex-object with no depth of character or intelligence.
Report as
if you want someone to see more than a body, if you're so dead set on proving your true talents and ideas that deserve so much respect, just be the best at what you do. If anyone(man or otherwise) doesn't see you for what you are worth, get over it, they aren't worth your time, or be so awesome in every way that you can't be ignored for your skills. But if you don't get that chip off your shoulder, or you're going to end up a very bitter person. Those women that are hotter than the rest of us aren't being exploited. How are they being taken advantage of? Most of them are old enough to make their own decisions. Who are you to decide that these women are to weak-minded to choose and enjoy their own career? Not every women has to grow up and become a doctor or lawyer. If being hot and getting payed for it is so horrible, maybe you should go stand up for the male models and performers as well. I see you feel strongly about this subject, but so do I. Complaining, rather than just simply proving themselves is half the reason men don't take women seriously.
Report as
Haha, no more trying to articulate thoughts in the middle of the night for me. I'm gonna try this again after sleep. I'm not trying to start an argument, just so you know. I just feel differently and find this subject very interesting.
Report as
I never called anybody weak minded or exploited, nor do I have a "chip on my shoulder". I don't have anything about models or actors, whether they're male or female. I know that they have challenging jobs and are usually talented. All I said was that I don't think people should be viewed as just a body. People need to pay attention to the mind, too. People who only try to pay attention to the body usually end up like those creeps that stare at a girls chest and then say that it's her fault for wearing a tight shirt, or a shirt with print on it, or just for having boobs in the first place.
Report as
This is why woman are objectified. The OP's question answered personified. I'm a man and I find this comment disheartening, funny, ignorant, and art all at the same time.
Report as
Okay... but why wear a shirt that is tight or revealing if not to attract that same attention. If someone shows off an attribute, smarts, humor or body parts... It's going to get noticed. So yeah, women are usually objectified in media simply because they decide to flaunt something men want to see... What do you want men to do? Look at a hot actress or porn star and appreciate likes and dislikes or other skills instead? That's like hiring a mechanic and giving a crap about his culinary skills...
Report as
Are you upset that a women is noticed for her looks rather than chosen profession? Cause if that's the case, it sounds like she must not be very impressive at what she does... I think for the most part if a women is good at what she does, her performance or work ethic comes first, then her looks. And I say for the most part because man or woman, some people are just shallow and will never recognize anything beyond a breathing body, but that's just how some people are. Which is fine by me, if someone wants to be a moron in that way, how does it really effect any one of us in such a horrible way? We just end up dealing with jerks now and then, that's life.

I agree with bentheredunthat. Men aren't completely to blame. There are many women who enjoy showing their bodies this way to attract men. So many ladies try so hard to look like stars that have their pics altered in Photoshop. Spend so much time, energy, money. When it can be spent on gaining knowledge and other valuable things. This shows the media's weakness on propagating moralityies.

I agree with ZJN and ben. I mean you can't blame it all on the men. I mean it is the women out there that are doing this. On another note, though, I think that a lot of women are starting to play naked scenes in movies and shows simply because they need money and the economy's really bad. If your'e talking about that, then blame it on the economy. We have to do what we can to get money. But you can't just blame it all on men.

The media does it because it sells and they make a bigger profit. It sells because people don't look beyond the instant titillation it provides to the long range consequences. Having morals of any sort isn't fashionable these days. And yet people don't seem any happier. Hmmm. Men have also become more objectified if you watch closely and they don't really like it either.

Sex sells. Women want men for their money/power and men want women for their looks (on average). I'm a guy, so I'm more likely to watch a show if it has a hot women in it even though it might be a crappy show. I will keep watching it if it has good acting and a good story. I'm attracted to a womans looks first, then their personality. But looks can only keep you around so long. For example wouldn't you be more likely to choose a place to live that has lush green trees, well kept homes, and clean streets more than a place that has dilapidated buildings and a dead guy blowing in the wind? Sex is something that grabs your attention good or bad, in your case bad. Just like a blonde will attract my attention more than a brunette, or guy that punches me in the balls will get my attention more than a guy that walks past me and says nothing. Television is an escape we don't get to see buildings explode, high speed car chases, hot women dancing, people that make us laugh, or have a bond with characters on tv in our every day lives. In the real world it's a lot more complicated than just flipping on the tv or looking up a website.

Everyone is objectified: Men are either misogynistic, wife beating, raping torturing asses; or absent fathers; gays are alway kind understanding and oppressed, women are there as sexy objects, or have over the top " I am woman hear me roar" assertive personalities. Christians and observant Jews are ignorant, anti-social haters; Muslims are either educated oppressed law abiding citizens dealing with racism from white men; or caricatures of bomb throwing maniacs. Other religions are treated as a curious throw away, that just used to fill out a biography and make everybody diverse.
This is all because YOU the readers ,viewers and listeners of the garbage and half baked crap that passes for entertainment from Hollywood and a socialist leaning media BUY it, and keep feeding them. All hail the revolution.

It's basic exploitation. Many women, minority, religious, and ethnic groups are exploited in the media. You are always going to find someone who is willing to perpetuate stereo types in order to make money. Unfortunately the majority who don't act that way are treated in the manner that the ones on TV portray.

I don't know. It's true that people all have their own rights, choices, "entertainment", and talents?, but it's still disappointing. It's not as if intelligence has gone down to a zero, it's just regarded to be something of lesser importance that the common day people in our society leave to people who walk around with pencils behind their ears, white lab coats on their shoulders and actual thinking brains in their heads. People should use those brains (hey, yeah, you actually have some!!) in their heads and realize that there is so much more to life than looking "hot" and pleasing the eyes of others with unfitting entertainment. Why focus on looks, I mean seriously? Women can surely allow others to look at them, I think it's wrong, but when that becomes media and what everyone "likes and expects", it reflects onto everyone else as welll!! I agree, it's part of art. It's part of your choice. It's been here before. But now there is too much and it's too important!!!

Good answer. And you know what? No matter how appealing a girl/woman looks, in the end she'll always be remembered for her shallow behavior & lack of self respect if she openly allows it. So true, parents are not teaching their daughters well enough the value of their best assets, their brains. Nothing is more sexy, beautiful & attractive than a happy, healthy, smart & classy woman w/a secure future ahead. (Think of the opposite. We all know one or two older women drowning in misery because they let life lead them down the wrong path. Not pretty.)
Report as
Yeah, exactly! Girls need to know that there are more important things in life than looks. And that starts with the adults! Whatever adults do is what the teens look up to, what are generation is going to be next. Teach them now, then see the change in the future.

The media is taken over by men, so it's no wonder why most movies portray a woman only as a trophy to be won by the manly man hero, and she has no other use than that.
Some stats from policymic.com: "According to statistics from the American Society of News Editors (ASNE) Newsroom Census, the percentage of female newsroom employees was about 37% between 1999 and 2010. In 2011, the percentage increased slightly to 40.5%. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that only 36.9% of women comprised of newspaper reporters, photographers, copy and layout editors, and supervisors. The same statistics also reported that 40% of total television news force and 28.4% of television news directors were made up of women in 2011. Although women represented about half of television news positions including assistant news directors, assignment editors, executive producers, producers, news reporters, writers, anchors and assistants, women were underrepresented among news photographers, sports anchors, and sports reporters. In radio news, women only comprise of 29.2% of the total workforce."

I completely agree. It is hard to find women in videos who aren't being sexual unless you are watching videos for children.Lots of women are corrupted these days. Sometimes it is to impress men, fit in with teenagers, or for fame. Either way, doing this will give you a better chance of going to Hell.

In an average day, a man or woman, girl or boy, could be exposed to sexually objectified images of women from a variety of sources. From the morning, all one has to do is turn on any television set to find an array of commercials that use sexualized images of females to promote products; on the way to work, there are billboards doing the same thing; a housewife might be exposed to sexual objectification on her favorite television shows from soap operas to primetime TV or late-night talk shows; one?s son or daughter is exposed to sexual objectifying lyrics on pop radio; and sexual objectification can be seen during most films at a movie theater. In today?s world, it is difficult for anyone to escape the pervasive, influential effects of sexual objectification, especially that of women.

Sexual objectification, by definition, is ?regarding or treating another person merely as an instrument or an object towards the person's sexual pleasure.? Similarly, sexualization can be defined as ?when a person?s value comes only front his/her sexual appeal or behavior.?

Mass media is certainly the most influential source on the area of sexuality. In today?s society, sexual objectification is often directed towards women, through a variety of media mediums ? from advertising, television, magazines, music lyrics and videos, and films. Examples of each and the negative consequences sexual objectification of women causes will be discussed throughout this site.

Sad! I think this is exactly why so much abuse takes place against women. Women are seen as objects and possessions without equality. This is what males are being fed through our society. We are sorely missing strong fathers who can teach their daughters a sense of self worth. Instead they are being fed all this garbage through media. Sigh....

I think what's on TV has a lot to do with this. We are insecure and feel we have to look a certain way to be loved. It's very sad, but this is the way the world and people have become. Not all women are insecure and are happy with how they are inside and outside.

Smart answer. Sexual activity on TV is interesting to men. It's their biology; they're very visual & it's very normal. So, men running the media naturally give themselves what they want to see - sex. But the media is hugely missing the mark w/ half their viewers, women. We often see the constant bombardment of sexual activity as tiresome & depressing for the reason you state. It's very difficult for us to look that good, in or out of bed, all the time. So we're clicking the channels in search of quality programming. (And why many PBS series have become so popular. Something a little different.) Commercial TV is all about fake boobs, fake hair & fake behavior. Yet we're led to believe it's real & what women need to feel good about themselves, & to deserve love. Being fake only builds on the fantasy of escape, that's all. In reality it's a lot of work to maintain, if not impossible to attain, & it leaves many women anxious & self conscious. And that means less meaningful time for the men in their lives. It goes full circle.

Because we live in a patriarchal society fueled by the unethical profit centric motives of capitalists.
we consider women as a commodity to be sold in market and not as a living thing
gender is a societal creation, again thanks to patriarchy
