What does blue smoke from the car's tailpipe mean?

some people in my town have really rundown cars. some even have blue smoke coming out of the exhaust of the car. what does blue smoke from the exhaust mean? how come it was more common in the 1990's than it is today? there are only a few cars today with blue smoke coming out the exhaust but there was a lot of cars in 90's that had blue smoke coming out of the tail pipe?

Blue smoke coming out the vehicle's tail-pipe means that you are burning oil and the engine is worn out. You may also have a faulty gasket, O-ring, or seal or worn valve guides and piston rings. An engine that burns a lot of oil is an engine that needs to be overhauled.

oh okay. thanks. i asked cause i was curious i've witnessed a few motorists out there with blue smoke coming out the exhaust. even School Buses. my car itself is fine. i may want to replace my brake fluid cause the braking is not what it used to be when i first got it. when i first got it the the car would brake once i tapped the brake pedal but now i have put the brake pedal to the floor to come to a complete stop.

Go to your local auto parts store and buy a special oil substitute to help engines that are burning oil. It's been a long time since I used it and I can't remember the name of it. It's rather expensive but it's well worth it. What weight oil are you running? It needs to be at least a 10w 30 or heavier. If you are using something lighter then that's why it's burning oil.
