A large part of the cost is related to drafting the application. If you draft it yourself, you will save a lot of money, But you also run a big risk; a patent application is a legal document. Filing fees cannot be avoided, but they can be minimized. Look up small entity and micro entity fees. If you qualify, you will save a lot of $$. And what type of patent application are you filing? Provisional? Utility? They have very different filing fees, and rights/potential associated with them. The technology at issue also may impact the cost. Very general ballpark figure: 6-10K to draft plus filing fee.
