The protagonist, Piscine Molitor "Pi" Patel, a Tamil boy from Pondicherry, explores issues of spirituality and practicality from an early age. He survives 227 days after a shipwreck while stranded on a boat in the Pacific Ocean with a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker.

Well, there are unbelievable things in this story. A giant fly catching plant which eats animals, fishes and humans??? Surviving for so many days without food? Living with a tiger is possible but... I don't think so.
No, it is not real. Yann Martel (the author) grabbed several ideas from a wide variety of real instances and books and tied them together in the book The Life of Pi. Although it would have been awesome if it was based on a true story, it's not. It's fictional.
