You figure out why you're depressed and try to solve it. If it has a source (a breakup, a family death) then you should take some time to reflect and come to terms with it, or perhaps seek a friend or counselor to help you.
Sometimes depression is simply caused by environmental triggers (like lack of sunlight) or by vitamin deficiencies. The best way to solve that is to get outside more, and start taking fish oil and Vitamin D supplements, as studies show that those with higher levels of Omega-3's have a lower rate of depression.
Seasonal Affective Disorder is also very common during the winter. Lots of mild depression cases are solved addressing these issues, though moderate to severe cases may still require counseling or prescription medication.

When my daughter told me she was cutting, at first I freaked out, because I didn't know what to do. Then we got her to the doctor and she got help to stop cutting. Call 1-800-DONT CUT (1-800-366-8288), they understand what you are going through and can help you to stop cutting.
Give your friend another chance, she just didn't understand why you are hurting yourself and did not know what to do. She obviously cares about you or she wouldn't have gotten upset. Take care
