Is religion bad?

I have a friend who is strongly against the idea of a god. I find it wrong how strongly she speaks against religion because science disproves it. Yes, I believe in science but I am thinking of becoming part o the Shinto religion. I don't want her to constantly tell when, when I do, that I'm just being blindfolded and that I will become stupid. Religion and science have also worked together hand in hand (ex: Muslim) and most scientists are catholic or religion. So to get to the point, is religion really all that bad?

Report as

In and of itself, no. But often people use it to instill fear in others and get power over them; THAT is wrong.

I don't believe there is. And I suspect that many more people than will admit it don't really believe in it either, or we would live in a very well-behaved society indeed. Who, truly believing in the concept of hell, would dare misbehave? So, I repeat, I doubt that very many people REALLY believe in it.

In Isaiah 40:22 the Hebrew word for round in that scripture means round like a plate or coin, not a ball. Galileo was condemn by the church for suggesting the earth was spherical rather than flat.

Actually I think rubenv might be right. Many kings and dictators had killed many people for not believing in the religion they wanted them to believe. So yes, religion can cause alot of trouble. And 'they' are the kings and dictators, and by calling them evil just means that religion can cause evil. Good job!

Most wars have to do with religion? I am sorry you feel that way. The French and Indian war, the war of 1812, The Civil War, the Revolutionary War, Vietnam, Korean War, the Napoleonic wars, the 100 years war, the war of the Roses, the Persian War, WWI, WWII, The Cold War, Desert Storm, the War on Terrorism (granted from the extremists point of view, it was a Jihad, but from the US point of view, it has nothing to do with religion). Of course I am not denying that there were religious wars, just I would say politics lay claim to this tittle. God bless.

No it is not. While your friend has every right to reject religion, you have the same right to practice it any way you see fit as long as it does not infringe on anyone else's belief, or disbelief. One question though, do you think your friend is rejecting religion, or spirituality? I ask because believe it or not, they are two very different things.

Religion and God are two different things. Religion is an organization created by humans, with all the problems that always creates. The Catholic religion, for one, has big problems with corruption, which people don't seem to question just because it's a religion. Science and religion haven't always worked well together, honestly. Look at poor Galileo, for just one example. And the suppression of knowledge and purposeful misdirection of people for gain. Anyway, you have to do what is right for you and stand up to your friend.

That is her belief and she has no right to judge you on your beliefs. If she is making you feel stupid because you are religious or believe in God, she isn't exactly the best friend you could have. It depends on the person and how they feel about religion. For some people, they could care less and don't believe at all. But for other people who have lost their way (or were never lost at all) religion has turned their life around and has given them hope and love and a good environment. Religion is very strong for the people who believe in it and it brings many people together. If you want to become (or are) religious nobody is stopping you. It is your decision not anyone elses.

Religion is not bad. Some individuals do bad things, using religion as an excuse, however. That does not mean all believers are bad, because of the actions of a few. People are people. Each one is responsible for his own actions.

People do "wrong" and are the "bad" ones. Religion is only an occasion where either good & bad are displayed. Religion would not exist without people. People are the moral agents. Religion reflects the people in this sense.

Religion has both good and bad aspects.

It is good for people who are in need of reassurance when facing death -- either their own, or that of a loved one. It is good for people who need something other than their own ability and determination to cope with the problems that life inevitably produces.

It is bad in that children are taught to fear a god who "loves" them but who will cast them into a fire of eternal torment for not believing in him, and it is bad when it bleeds money from parishioners who can ill-afford it.

It is good when it provides facilities for those people who, for whatever reason, are unable to provide adequate food and accommodation for themselves; and it is good when it undertakes other civic good works.

It is bad when it uses the power of the pulpit to influence legislation in favour of its own, usually outmoded, doctrines, when it discriminates against people with whom it disagrees (gays are an example), and when it covers up crime, which we have seen in the Catholic cover-up of paedophilia by its priests.

For better or worse, I think we're stuck with it because some people will always need an invisible friend.

The religion of the supernatural has been a curse. To hate man and worship god seems to be the sum of all the creeds. Religion makes enemies instead of friends. It keeps its back to the sunrise, and guards with a miser's care the "sacred" falsehoods of the past. Religion is not the product of civilized man. Hence, there has not been invented a new major religion in the last 1400 years.

I will not say the religion has been an unmitigated evil in all respects, though its history is infamous and glorious. It has delighted in the production of extremes. It’s designed murders for its own martyrs. It’s sometimes fed the body, but has always starved the soul. It’s been a profligate beggar — a generous pirate. It’s produced some angels and a multitude of devils. It’s built more prisons than asylums. It made a hundred orphans while it cared for one. In one hand it’s carried the alms-dish & in the other a sword. It’s founded schools and endowed universities for the purpose of destroying true learning.

Religion supports nobody. It has to be supported. It is a perpetual mendicant. It lives on the labors of others, and yet has the arrogance to pretend that it supports the giver.

There are thousands of religions. This is what you should look for in a religion. The truth.
Consider the practices and teachings of first-century Christians:
They looked to God's Word as their guide. 2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:21.
They taught that Jesus was God's Son, distinct from God himself and subordinate to Him. 1 Corinthians 11:3; 1 Peter 1:3.
They taught that the dead will return to life by means of a future resurrection. Acts 24:15.
They were known overall for the love that prevailed among themselves. John 13:34, 35.
They did not worship merely as individuals but were organized into congregations and were united under overseers and a central body of elders that looked to Jesus as Head. Acts 14:21-23; 15:1-31; Ephesians 1:22; 1 Timothy 3:1-13.
They were zealous preachers of God's Kingdom as mankind?s only hope. Matthew 24:14; 28:19, 20; Acts 1:8.

Cars cause accidents, but they are also helpful to get from here to there. Some people put bombs in them, but they aren't made bad, but perverted by people who would twist a car to make it a weapon.
Religion is not an evil in itself, but can be twisted by people with evil intent. However, society can and should provide support for it, just as we make roads for cars. Government can't but they can provide a tax break for those who give; in this way, it supports religion without giving a preference.

Religion isn't suppose to be bad. It was meant to control people for the good and teach them about morality. But not everyone has the same standards of morality, and unfortunately, some religious leaders had different moralities than we do today. For example, the bible actually SUPPORTS slavery, and beating your women was OK, but today we now know it is wrong. And there were kings, queens, and dictators who were indoctrinated and anyone who didn't want to accept the religion they wanted them to accept, they were imprisoned or even killed! So it has caused alot of trouble.

Also, there is a correlation between a religious country with math and science. The more religious a country is, the more it lacks of mathematics and science (Which is why the United States is so far behind other countries that are less religious... we used to be the BOSS!!). And it is affecting us greatly. And even with all the good aspects, I think it is doing more bad than good. I mean, look at what Christianity has done to this crazy lady down below!

Religion- Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe, esp. a personal God or gods.

Based on this definition of religion, it doesn't seem bad to believe in a creator, the Sovereign of the universe, God. However, should we have reverence for any supernatural power or god? No.

God's word make it clear that there's only one true God, one true faith. Eph. 4:5,6 says: "One Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all [persons], who is over all and through all and in all."

We can conclude then that, there is only one true religion. And that true religion would reflect the only true God, Jehovah, not a triad or trinity. Psalms 83:18 says: "That people may know that you whose name is Jehovah, you alone are the most high of all the earth." Deut. 6:4 says: ''Listen, O Israel: Jehovah our God is one Jehovah." If these things are true, it would make that religion good and true.
