It could have been way worse.

The killing of other people will always be BAD and can never be rightfully justified. It's just really one of those really really dark spot in humanity, wars, that we should learn from and never go through again.

The Japanese would have surrendered anyway. The day the bombs hit was the day the Soviets entered the war...

First of all it the nukes on Nagasaki and Hiroshima both were at the last time frame of WWII before the USSR took action in invasion of Japan to end the war. the u.s. thought the USSR would put the communist influence in Japan, which is a threat to more causalities as Stalin kills off millions of his own civilians. Also the Japanese government refuse to give in unconditional surrender which made them worry about what will happen to the emperor since he is a god in the Japanese society image. It saved men on both sides since u.s. would needed a land invasion and not to forget the kamikaze planes, then they are more causlities. Also on how the nuke showed the u.s. the "powerhouse." It ended the war quicker and plus the killings of Japanese of the bombing were far less then the japan did to the chinese during the shino japanese war and the rape of naijing (sorry i can't spell), so it saved more chinese lives that were under the occupation of the japanese invasion.

So it's your opinion that over 400,000 innocent people were vaporized to save lives?? Let's hope no one else gets the same notion about Americans!
Report as
Ya... But here's a good question to maybe think about for your paper. Was the second bomb drop necessary?
Report as
The first one wasn't, so the second one wasn't. This isnt even close to being open for debate. An atom bomb is the mother of all crimes against humanity.

The president would have been seen as incapable of running the country had he not dropped the bombs, when knowing full well that it could end up saving lives.
Report as
No. First of all, after he did use the bomb he was viewed as a terrible president. He left office with one of the worst approval ratings in American history. Second, the Soviets just entered the war, and the Japanese would have surrendered anyway. Indeed, the Japanese generals themselves said that they surrendered because the soviets were coming. America bombed Japanese cities to oblivion through bombing on a regular basis. The A bomb was not a greater deterrent, if you believe the Japanese, than the arrival of the soviets... Third, even if it could have saved American lives, is that better than Japanese lives?
Report as
really i just debated this in class the japanese were arogant to surrender and even they had been warn, because they were loyal to the emperor they didn't surrender to the first bomb. until the second one that the japanese felt at a great loss. more men would of died in a land raid. even they were innocent it prevented the USSR coming in and puting their influence in their since the USSR forced other countries in Europe to be communist. And USSR killed more of their own men more than the bomb itself. And the uSSR was the high in tech. andavncement, that is why americas try to liberate most of eroupe to avoid the USSR influence. And the numbers weren't 400,000 but less. Plus the air raids killed much more. in aa way it was a scrafice to avoid a never ending war that would end up taking up more lives. sorry but i like to debate

Are you referring to World War 2? If so, 'justifying' civilian casualties is pointless. It's a terrible thing that happens in war - especially when you start the war at Pearl Harbor and refuse to surrender at the price of your own citizens.

There is never justification for murder, especially mass murder. Oh sure, our history books explain it away, excuse it, make it sound necessary. But one must ask if the excuses would be as forthcoming if such an act was perpetrated against America.
