What do they do with old cars?

There must be 1000s of cars every year that are no longer driven. What usually happens to these cars? Does someone recycle their parts, metal?

Report as

Recycling cars is a multi-billion dollar per year industry. Most of a car is made up of steel, which is much less expensive to recycle than create new. In fact, a large portion of the US steel supply comes from recycled cars. According to a recent study released by the Steel Recycling Institute, automobiles are recycled
more than any other product, with nearly 100 percent of vehicles recycled today for their iron and steel content, (which comprises 67 percent of each vehicle). In 2008, this resulted in more
than 14.8 million tons of steel recovered for re-use from scrapped automobiles. Depending on the condition of the car to be scrapped, many of it's parts can be removed and sold to wholesale distributors and refurbishing centers. Some are sold directly to consumers from "junk yards" (now called recycling centers) and put to use once more. More:

They get sent to a scrapyard and the the parts are usually bought at a pick and save, and then eventually crushed and recycled
