What would cause a ten year old boy to wake up and refuse to go back to sleep?

My son goes to sleep after I lay with him and read for a few minutes. He then comes over stating he cannot sleep, so I take him to his room and put him to sleep. But what does he do? He comes over again and it starts. I raise my voice at him and he starts crying. The kicker is that when he keeps getting up and I yell at him to go to bed he just stands there a looks at me like I'm speaking another language. He acts so stubborn and defiant, but during the day he listens to me just fine. I want this to stop. Can anyone give me answers to why there is this waking up and complete personality change?

he could have a fear of sleeping alone. even in sleep the subconscience mind knows things. its like a wake-sleep thing. he notices even in sleep you have left and it jolts him awake. thus why he comes out claiming he can't sleep cause he needs that comfort that you provide him. the attitude change could be part of it cause in a way he could know that giving attitude will give him his way. and so far it appears that it has been working for him.

He might have had a bad dream, could be over stimulated, or if he slept in and went to bed early his body might not let him go back to sleep.

Is he sleepwalking? That sounds like really strange behavior if he's the opposite during the day.

He may be afraid to sleep alone. Or he may be having night terrors. Yelling at him is not the solution. A stuffed animal for security, a night light (or flashlight - make certain he can't get the batteries out) so he can see or a nice, calm, happy ending story before bed would have better results. Sleeping with the dog could also help him feel safe.

Since he's crying when you confront him I doubt it's defiance.

Is he playing violent video games? Watching any violent shows? 10 year olds can argue why zombies DO exist. It may be too much for his young mind. He also may be overstimulated.

Good luck!

I used to do that sorta too when I was about that age. I wouldn't be able to sleep so I constantly would wake my parents up for help. My parents never yelled at me though but I did feel bad for waking them up. What you could do is not let him watch tv an hour or longer before he goes to sleep to calm his mind and maybe have him read a book. Or what I would do sometimes is drink warm milk.
