Why do some people rinse chopped onion under water before adding it to recipes?

Rinsing the onion, removes some of the juice that causes the onion to sting and burn your eyes. Rinsing can also soften the flavour of the onion, so the taste is not so strong.

Some people rinse onions under water 'before' chopping them into pieces so those onions don't cause their eyes to water.

Mahsiddiqui, if you don't know the answer please don't comment. I believe they put it under water to either cleanse the smell of the onions or to wash off some of the toppings that they put on it from something else like basil? (So they can just get the smell of basil) Hope this helped!
