Why does my dog follow me everywhere and stay by my feet? I want space.

Because dogs are pack-animals, and he loves you. Take advantage of it while you can, dogs don't live long enough and soon you'll be missing him.

Well then enjoy his company. Your friend obviously cared enough to sacrifice for to to feel better instead of so sad. My dog comes in the bathroom with me. I don't have a problem with that. If you need a breather, tell your dog you love him & you will be back in 5. Close the door & have your space & then re enter & spend time with your dog. My dog is on my knee if I'm seated watching tv & she sleeps on the top of my bed on her blanket. If for any reason I wake up & she isnt there i go look for her. I would be lost without her. She is the sunshine of my life.

How often, and for how long a period of time do you walk the dog?

Cause he loves you! Pay attention to the poor dog!
I have 4, they all follow me around the house. I haven't been to the bathroom alone in 9 years! They sleep with me.
They love me!

As Tony mentioned, dogs are pack animals. They have a order of who is in charge. There is one 'alpha' and the rest are 'betas'....and when a dog has a human owner, the owner is the alpha, the one they take lead from. The one they watch to see if they should be scared or alarmed or nap. The only way to get space is to teach him that it is ok for you two to not be in the same room. Start by teaching him the command for 'stay' and give him a small treat and a lot of love when it is done right. Over time this will translate to the dog that being a part for a little bit is not bad and perfectly normal. Right now...the dog is looking for you to lead!

The dog loves you more then you love him. This is the difference between human and animal behavior.

Maybe you could close the door behind you for a while. Dogs are just plain attached to their people, it wants to be there to protect you if you need it, help you hunt, play, or sleep. You are his reason for living. If you don't feel like you can love this animal, it might be kinder for you to find a good home for it. Think of the dog's happiness before your own, he doesn't have any choice about it, so you have to make it for him.

Dogs are highly social oriented. You are probably the leader of the pack to him.
