At what age is it ok to leave a child home alone without a babysitter?

Report as

Most state laws state 12/13 for short periods of time. After school, no overnights.
This varies by child, some aren't responsible, others do great.

When baby is grown enough to look after himself, he can be responsible, and in case of some emergency he is able to contact the authority or his parents. I think it should be between 10 to 12 yrs of age.

Depends how "mature" they are. Me and my husband left his son home at age 10 but not for long periods of time. He had his own cell phone for emergencies. He we completely content with his tv and video games. He was a good kid thought and we trusted him.

check what the law is in your area because even though you may feel that the child is very responsible if amething god forbid did happen they will look at the law to see if your child was actually old enough by law and if not you can grt in big trouble with the law and even go to jail but it is also inportant to know how responsible your child is because their are children out their who are of age but not responsible enough so you really have a couple of things to look at.

Actually (as of 2007) only 2 states have specific laws regarding the minimum age a child can be left alone. The key is whether or not you feel the child is mature enough to handle being left alone, and that they understand how to get help if needed while you are not there. https://www.childwelfare.gov/pubs/factsheets/homealone.cfm

There is no law that set a minimum age for a child at which they can be left alone at home. However, we can think of leaving them alone at age 10-11as it is a good general benchmark for quick daytime trips, with longer unattended stints or an evening alone becoming appropriate during the early teens.

I started staying home alone when I was 11, but I think 12 and older is fine :)
