I don't know much about guns, and i'm a little embarrassed to ask: What is caliber?

Report as

It's the diameter of the barrel and corresponding size of bullet used to fire through that same barrel.

It's the diameter of the barrel, and how people refer to their guns.

Don't ever be embarrassed. You asked a good question. How will you learn if you have a fear of asking. Remember, no question asked is ever stupid. It is "stupid" not to ask the question. Happy day!

Particularly in firearms, the caliber is the diameter of inside of the barrel. You can check out here for different models http://www.eurooptic.com/rifles-by-caliber.aspx

Caliber is only the barrel, it has nothing to do with bullets. bullets are actually 1 or 2 thousandths bigger than the barrel, for instance a bullet for the 223 Remington measures .224..

A Caliber is the approximate internal diameter of the barrel, or the diameter of the projectile it fires.
