Examples:
1) Fraction - fraction:
get common denominators,
1/2 - 3/4 = 2/4 - 3/4 = -1/4
2) Mixed numbers:
get common denominators,
+ or - the whole numbers,
+ or - the fractions.
You may have to borrow.
2 3/5 - 1 1/2 = 2 6/10 - 1 5/10= 1 1/10
3) Mixed numbers and fractions:
make the mixed number into a fraction
get common denominators,
+ or - numerators.
2 1/3+3 1/3 = 7/3+10/3 = 17/3 or 5 2/3
ALWAYS SIMPLIFY AS LAST STEP.

You so the same exact thing but you don't have to deal with any whole numbers
