How does a GPS talk to you?

I understand the positioning part but I don't understand how the voice works

Report as

The people who make the GPS ask a person to pronounce certain words/phrases and record them to use. They then have the person say certain sounds. Once they have all the recordings, they set the device to know which word goes with which sound, therefore making the GPS talk.

Turn up the volume, put in a location of where you're trying to get to and just start driving and it'll start talking. If it doesn't you may need to buy a new one.
